I've been stopping by my local flea market every weekend looking for good deals on coins and anything else I can find. I picked up a peace dollar in nice condition for $18 along with a couple of SAEs for $20 each. I noticed that junk silver gets snapped up pretty fast there.
Anyway, I'm noticing more people selling coins there now, which is not unexpected. What did surprise me a little was that one dealer was discounting his extensive selection of old baseball/football cards by 75%. They were a little over-priced to begin with, but it shows how quickly people are starting to forego certain luxuries like sports memorabelia. I think flea markets are good places to observe commercial behavior.
For those of you who go to your local flea market; what strange/interesting things are you seeing?

maybe but baseball cards are just paper. From a coin buyers standpoint Flea markets are great for that occasional seller who is cleaning out the attic or basement. The weekly dealers normally know what they have and price it accordingly.

Please dont pay $20 for a SAE. I would think you could find cheaper that that. $18 for a common date Peace dollar, it should be in AU shape IMO.
What is "nice" condition to you? |

With respect to the peace dollar I'm no expert, but its the best condition I've seen (not that I've seen too many). It has the original shine and great detail. The only flaws are a small nick on the side and a barely visible scratch on the face. For a moment I thought it might be a fake but it weighed out ok and it chimes like silver.
In terms of paying $20.00 for an SAE, I don't see another option. The days of getting eagles for $17 on E Bay are long gone. I see them going for as much as $22 now. Here are what the dealers are charging:
Apmex - 18.99
Monex - 18.88 (I think you have to order 100)
American Gold Exchange - $39 (proofs?)
Silver Superior Coins - $22.53
Kitco - $18.67
In my area
Pro Coins - 18.95
The Nickel Trader $20.00
These prices do not include S&H charges; and the fact that I can take the coin home immediately is worth about a dollar per coin to me. I've also had a difficult time beating $18 for Peace and Morgan dollars.
I know I have a lot to learn about buying silver so please tell me where I can get these coins for cheaper. Please post any links you might have.
Thanks |

Try Bullion Directs nucleo exchange.
You must be logged in to see this link.(1.00_oz).html
You want to look at the ask collum, or you can put in your bid price.
Currently has 225 for sale at $18.40 each. Not sure how shipping works, but I think your only shipping cost is mailing your money to BD |

Congrats! I was hoping to find a deal like that yesterday. Two weeks ago I picked up a few nicked up 1 oz Silvertown rounds for 14.50 each (also $1.00 over spot). Unfortunately I didn't have the cash on me to buy more. Apparently 30 minutes after I left someone came along and snapped the ten rounds he had left. You have get there early to get the junk silver. |

I recently did a small transaction on bullion direct nucleo exchange to see how it all works.
You have to pay bullion direct a 1% commission fee on Nucleo transactions. Also, once you want to have physical possession of the PMs you have to pay them a Shipping and Handling charge. It was 15 (10 shipping, 5 Handling) dollars for my small amount. |

If I am correct as a buyer you dont have to pay a 1% commission fee. I belive its only when you sell you have to pay the fee. |

I agree with you on all counts. I have seen more coins being sold, a marked decrease in the price of sports cards, and I think flea markets are a neat place to get a read of commercial activity.
What I have observed is this: that more and more staple items such as cloths, food, etc are being sold in flea markets than in the past, as opposed to just junk, collectibles, luxuries, etc. People are not ashamed to buy everyday items there and are really trying to be economical. Its a good trend in my view that people are becoming more savings conscience after the 20 year long credit splurge we just had. |

Where are you located Theo? If you're in Wisconsin, I can get you better deals on Peace and Morgan dollars. I just bought 5 of them about 10 days ago for $14/each, and then got some on Friday for $15/each.
