I'm getting my change at the counter from renting some movies and the cashier opens a penny roll to get change. Inside the red wrapper is an aluminum wrapper that the cashier shakes his head at in disgust as he opens it. "I hate these wheat pennies", he says. "How many you got?", I ask. "Too many", says he. He goes in the vault and gets me rolls outside dated 1945, two 1946, 1947, 1952D, and 1955. Wow.
What's with the aluminum inner wrappings?

Great score! And you were a nice guy and helped that clerk get rid of those terrible wheat pennies he hates. The aluminum foil was a way guys in the old days used to wrap coins (usually BU) to keep them from coming into contact with the paper coin wrapper which contained a large amount of sulpher and might unattractively tone the coins. |

It's our self-perpetuating monetary system at work. Most people are so heavily inundated with popular culture which constantly reinforces the "value" of paper money, that everything else is seen as scrap metal or a silly hobbyist relic. Try explaining to them that paper money is actually a debt, and they'll look at you like you're telling them day is actually night.
Got any of that pesky gold lying around? Just go to my website and put in your address, I'll mail you a box which you can use to finally get rid of it by sending it to me!! After I've received it and had the chance to look it over and assign it a dollar value at my own sole discretion (but you don't have a clue what it's actually worth anyway, so whatever), I'll send you COLD HARD CASH!!!!
I love it when bank tellers hand me silver halves, sighing with relief the whole time having finally gotten rid of them. win-win, I guess. They get rid of the ridiculous dinosaur money, I make an instant profit by just asking a question. |
