Here's one for everyone to think about. If the grid goes down [for any reason from overload like happened in the Northeast a few years back, Weather like the ice storm that knocked power out for days here, solar flares, unrest, etc] everyday items that run on electricity will be of no use. I've found that a lot of old fashioned hand powered or cranked items are available at thrift stores fairly cheap.

I got an antique hand cranked mixer for $1.99, a hand cranked meat slicer for $10, and a hand cranked meat grinder for $5. I'm always keeping my eye out for other items like these too.

From eBay I got a hand cranked emergency radio for $10 so that even without batteries or power I can listen to news or alerts.

What items like these do you have or what are you looking for?

I have a couple hand crank flash lights. One of them doubles as a radio, which surprisingly works. I've seen these items at Gander Mountain, Wal-Mart and K-Mart. They cost between $10 and $20, at least for now.

I also have a very old cast iron, hand crank coffee grinder. This thing was old when my grandfather bought it 75 years ago. We used it to grind coffee beans a few weeks ago, and it works.

Hand cranked grain mill is very usefull too, you can make flour to oatmeal with one. Kinda like a coffee grinder.
