I read NotABigDeal's post about gold and thought it could never happen to me.
Tonight, the second handful of pennies from a $50 bag produced a nickel sized earring that was bent up a bit. I'm thinking it's just junk jewelry. After examining it with a loupe, there is a 14K stamp on the little post that is on the tiny hinge!
The wife has the camera and won't be back til Friday - I'll post a pic this weekend.

Very nice! When it rains it pours....and here I am unable to even find 40% silver halves in $500 boxes. :P

Both nice finds! I wonder how the jewelry ends up in with the coins, maybe moved to the coin jar with a handful of change and then dumped into a coin counter somewhere? But then how likely is it to work its way through and make its way to a bag? I can just picture a tenth oz gold (or say platinum) round ending up in a dime or penny roll by some freak ocurrence.

Odds of gold being found in a penny bag has to be very slim. Yep, I'm waiting for a 1/10th ounce anything.... (But not holding my breath)

daviscfad, my bags are obtained from banks and credit unions. Find a bank or so that has a coin counter/sorter and offer to buy them. If you can get them to call you when the bags are full, or hold them for you, that's even better. If you get this set up, ALWAYS buy the bags they have and do not dump on those branches.

A good while back there was a guy, can't remember his name, who found a platinum charm in a penny bag. I have seen jewelery bits in the reject tray, but it has always been fake. People seem to have an odd habit of mixing jewelery with coins and then dumping the whole thing in the self-serve coin machines. Most of it probably ends up in either the trash bin or comes out the reject tray, but some pieces are obviously making it into the bags. Congrats! Since I rarely order bags, my odds are pretty low....

Thanks guys-

Davis- the bags come from bank machines. I have an arrangement at this particular bank where there is a self serve machine and it is not free. That assures there will be a low chance of finding CRH dumps. Like Deal says - always buy any bag offered - although I don't buy their quarters and small dollars - they know I like everything else. Never dump at a source bank!!!

psi- It is amazing to see the variety of non-coin debris in those self serve machine bags. Glass shards and open safety pins are not uncommon. I have found quite a variety of jewelry - mostly junk, a little silver but never gold!

Does it count if you find it outside the bank?
I found a 14K stamped dangly ear ring on the sidewalk when I was going in to buy pennies.

Using Kitco's scrap prices it seems that earring could be worth around $32 (assuming it weighs 2 grams).

I also remember that member Horgad was thinking of. It was a rather *cough* interesting shaped plat. charm if I remember.

Any ways nice job on the gold strike and the current increase of penny bag strikes!

I work at a grocery store with a coinstar machine. My store manager says she has found several earrings in the trash bucket inside the machine. I guess earrings go in your change pile at home? I never knew that...most girls have a jewelry box.

I think it is all 14K gold. It has just the right color from the surface and from the indentation design. I think the body of the earring is hollow since gold earrings tend to be hollow nowadays. Some jewelers reduce the weight any way they can to reduce the price and sell more jewelry, especially earrings.

Yep, I have seen quite a bit of scrap jewelry. There is no doubt that is 100% 14K.

i agree. you can spot the vermeil crap from a mile away. usually it has a reddish tarnish color. At some point after you have seen thousands of pieces of gold, and made at least a hundred mistakes or so it begins to set in as to what gold looks like. if you want to make a business of buying and selling gold you had better know what gold looks like (if you can't play craps, don't go to the casino).

Funny you mention a reddish tarnish color. That can still be gold. Mixture of gold and copper also know as rose gold.

No it won't be. gold will never tarnish. A rose gold appearance is just that a rosy gold color, not tarnish. You will see what I am speaking of, once you see it you will always know it. They can make gold in any color you want practically. Gold has depth, creaminess, smoothness. It is something you will be able to spot easily.

Hi TXTim -

Thats a nice bonus to find in a bag of copper!! I can't find anything that good in a park or a shopping mall unless I'm paying for item. These bags/boxes of pennies do you order them at the bank? I'm not sure if they offer that here in Ontario, Canada. Is it a free service? I'm still going through my rolled pennies to pull the 1982-96 copper ones that I thought were zinc!

Best regards, Bart

Nice. Yes. Very nice.

Oh just lighter weight copper. Interesting story how the mint chopped off the "sides" to lighten the coin and save money. BTW now you can just pull everything that is not round - should go quick.

Thanks Bart and welcome!
I have the bank order me boxes and I buy bags from banks that have bag-type coin counter-sorters. I also ask for customer wrapped rolls occasionally.
No fees involved. Some banks do charge a fee and those are best to avoid.
Good Luck!
