So I have a friend I work with, over the last 4 mo him and I have talked about coins. He knows what I do (search rolls etc.) He talked about how his Mom made him do this in the early 70's and they did it for yrs.
So I told him the other day I'm putting a dime collection together and I hope to have a complete set of the silver dimes starting with Barber. I did add since I will never have a large budget for this I probably wouldnt ever have some of the key dates...
16d, 21d, etc....
So today he comes into my office. Now I know about his mom being a hoarder (a real visionary IMO) and he tells me...
"So I looked thru some 1916 rolls" ROLLS mind you...
"And out of the 2 rolls I checked" TWO ROLLS WTF!!! Has more then 2 rolls also I found out later.
"She has 6 16d's" OMG my jaw hit the floor. Mind you this isn't even going thru all the rolls she has.
He shows me a scan of 2 of them Front of one, Back of the other.
THESE WERE BOTH AT LEAST AU55, MOST LIKELY MS 60+
Being the honest person I am... I told him they could be worth a ton of money, put those in 2x2's and send them off for grading I would insure them for big money and probably wouldn't send them together.
Anyways I said "I would love to have one of those, but I couldn't afford more then $200.00." He said he would see what he could do since I have helped him with some values of coins he has told me about.
Not getting my hopes up, but you never know, I just wanted to share this story more then anything... I just can't imagine, having not 1, but at least 6 of a coin that could go for more then 5g's apiece and all found from roll hunting 35yrs ago...
I asked would she have any 21d's? He said ya, probably at least a few... LOL

WOW! But how were these that available/common just 35 years ago? WOW!!
55 years ago, maybe.... 75 years ago, sure, but wow! just 35 years ago. That is great for him.
If he talks about selling them, tell him to keep the best one for himself and sell off the others! |

Fantastic. If I were you I'd not try to play games with him. I mean tell him the truth or something like that. You could get a copy of the Red Book or go to the PCGS web site and print out the prices of those. Of course tell him those are the highest selling prices sort of like the sticker on a car. Sure would be great if you could get one of the better ones. The 21 and 21D also. As long as your at it check for the 26S and 31D in MS grades. And way, way back those were just common coins you know. Way, way back when I was a kid I walked past a coin shop. In the window was a plate with 10 1916D Mercury Dimes for $1.50 each. I purchased all of them. Have no idea where I got that much money back then. All were in about EF grades. Of course this was about 1948 or so. Not many coin collectors then. I still have all those. |

No I would never play games, I told him from the scans, that those are worth a ton of money, I would never try to play games. I said if you don't send for grading, put those somewhere very secure...
Then I showed him what the best of the best went on HA...
When I told him I would buy one for $200.00 I explained that thats what I could afford, If they would want to let the worst one go for that I would be very happy, but it's worht more then $200.00
Probably though the worst one they have is EF40 or better...
The important part that I feel good about is, whatever they do they know they have something of real value... And it will now be stored more securely.
Crap, still shaking my head when I think about the scan... The back of the one was FSB... |

The guy and his mom will also know that you oober are a trustworthy guy who won't try to cheat or take advantage of them!
Trust is a big deal in this world, be it coins, investments, stocks, you name it. Knowing they can trust you, that you won't steer them wrong, will make them search for a decent enough 16D to sell to you as a way of thanking you for being so honest (at least I hope this is how it plays out.)
******************** This is just speculation on my part, but here goes...
You said they found the dimes roll hunting 35 years ago, say 1974 or so. It is possible there were some sheeple back then who didn't know any better and just rolled up the dimes for spending money, people passed on and the heirs found the coins and thought they were not worth more than face value & took them to the bank (much the same way that 100% rolls of wheat cents are found on occasion.)
1974 was the last year of the 1972-74 stagflation, money was tight, coins taken to the bank for paper money to pay bills was looked upon as a wise decision back then.

| Here is one more thing to consider. Remember that the 1916D Mercury Dime and the 1909S VDB coins are the most counterfeited coins on Earth. Prior to purchasing any of those I would ask if it is OK to have them authenticated by either PCGS or NGC. For possibly a few thousand dollar coin, a $25 or more investment in that would really be smart. |

| I'm suprised that everyone keeps saying a few thousand dollar coin. If they are truly in AU-50 - MS-60 we're looking at $9,200.00 to $13,200.00 for one of the buggers according to my outdated guide. Even in XF-40 $5,950.00 Heck, I sold one that was graded Fair-2 by SGCS on Ebay for $550.00 a few years ago. Now my guide has one in G-4 at $1,050.00. Heck if you friend wanted to sell an AU-50 one for $2,000.00 count me in. If anyone has one they bought for $1.50 years ago that isn't a cull and wants to sell it for $300.00 count me in. |

If you play for the long term, painfully honest pays.
Any deals that I have made that I could have taken advantage of and did not, have ended up being a referral for even a better deal.
Nothing lets you sleep better than being fair and it makes you money in the long term. |

| I know a guy that in 65 he roll hunted for silver. He just cashed them in about a year and a half ago to buy a house. I wonder if he let go any key dates for bullion value. |

G-4 or just Good $80 VG-8 or Very Good $130 F-12 or Fine $210 VF-20 or Very Fine $420 EF-40 or Extra Fine $775 These are the prices from the Red Book which, as a rule, are about 20% or more over actual values. Also, due to the economy lately, most coins are not selling real well. You should hold off selling such coins for now. |

Maybe. They may also be selling worse in a year if comrade obama gets his way. |
