I was wondering with the price of copper being just under face value if I was the only one that has slowed down on sorting? It just seems like those bags are a lot heavier now lugging them up and down the stairs than they were when copper was approaching 3 times face value.
I don't think anything has really changed. I think in the future copper pennies will be worth several times face. It might just take a little longer than we would like to see.

| I don't actually have a life either, but I've slowed down on copper and spend more time with nickel. |

I'm a newbie- starting to save pennies. What's the deal with nickel? Nickels up to a certain date have more nickel in them? Thanks- |

Steady hammering away at copper. A nickels value can reach above face very easily. It was very high not too long ago....

I'm rampping up my Cu search efforts. I actually was over 50% on $10 of CWR's today. It almost made me break out in a happy dance! CWR's seem to be a lot better than $50 bricks in my neck of the woods right now.
PS for Greg - Nickles coined in the USofA are75% Cu and 25% Ni unless they have a large P, D, or S on the reverse and are dated in the early '40's (then they have Ag in them). Canuk-a-Nickles (coined by our neighbor in the Great White North) are different compositions of Ni percentages for different years. |

| Thanks CJones. Please excuse my ignorance as I am new to this hobby. I need to be patient as I learn. I have a Coins Red book and looked at the nickel info. Do people save nickels for the Cu content as its 75%? Or the nickel? Or both? What will people who save nickels do with them? I see '42-45 have some silver. Do people save nickels to later sell, ie Ebay? Its illegal to melt them. Is that still done anyway? Could you please enlighten me. Am very much interested in learning more. Are there articles to teach me- what resources are available? I have many ?s ie How many reasons are there for people saving all copper pennies? I've been reading some are saving ALL pennies? Why? What will they do with them? Thanks much. |

Greg Kaler.......Welcome to this forum. To answer a lot of your questions, select some of the previous topics trying to read a few each day and it will bring you up to speed quite quickly as to the various reasons people save/search their coins. Some of us began searching for one reason and it quickly evolved to other reasons. But, for whatever your reason you began this hobby, enjoy yourself. It is illegal to melt down the copper and/or nickel coins here in the US and no one on here condones illegal activity. Most are saving for the day when it is no longer illegal or when the coins have reached a point of scarcity that they are then traded with a premium times face value as is the silver coinage from our past. Some people also find some error coins and have made a little bit selling these as well.
NDFarmer.......To get back on topic, I have had to slow down in my searching of coins, but not by choice. Other things have had to take priority over it for now but I have not stopped it completely. Miss searching my coins terribly as it has also caused a slow down in my being able to visit this forum as often as I would like. Life has gotten in the way for now, but it has nothing to do with the value of the coins being less than they were earlier in 2008. When my time allows me the pleasure, I will begin searching again with as much vim and vigor as before.

| I have actually ramped up my orders. I have long term goals. I also have yearly goals to meet my long term goals. If I can reach my yearly goal of pennies by April then I can move on to just Halves for the rest of the year. I also have other projects I need to do during the spring and summer. That way I can put away the Ryedale for those seasons and pick up a box or some CRW's here and there and build a pile till winter when I will be inside more. |

| I have been focusing more on obtaining silver myself recently. But as the recession (depression)grows even deeper every day, and with Obama willing to spend like mad to get us out of it, copper pennies still seem to make good 'cents' no matter how the economy plays out. |

| I have also slowed down hoarding cents. Partly due to the price of copper but mostly other projects that need my time. The opportunity cost of spending time accquiring, sorting and disposing of zinc has always been a concern to me. As a business owner with a long to do list, penny sorting has never been the best economic choice for me, but I enjoy the hunt for wild indians and wheaties too much to quit. I found an AU 1955 s red today in a cwi box. |
