I was unrolling pennies on my lunch hour and dumping them in a bucket. I spotted what I thought was a steel penny. I pulled it out and it was a 1974. First thought was, someone was trying to make it look like a steel penny. Then when I looked at the date again...1974...oh yeah that was the year the aluminum penny was made and destoyed. One is in the Smithsonian and rumors say that some where kept by congressmen. The back showed some copper showing through the coating.
Thought it was kinda funny and cleaver.
That was my exciting discovery this week.
You don't have to be the BEST you just have to be.......SLICK
Most likely it is an unsanctioned high school science project involving Hg. The Cu showing on the back would be a good indicator that some has rubbed off over time. (I used to dip pennies in Hg when the teacher wasn't looking, back in the day. It made them really shiny, way cool Man!) Don't place it in your mouth or heat it and inhale the fumes!!
