This one I actually might consider. It is not marked with metal content and weight like the other really expensive ones, but I guess I could do that myself.
He doesn't have the shipping price listed though. The auction says buyer to pay UPS cost. I have no idea how much that would be.
It looks like the seller is a metal supplier of some kind. I wonder if I could get him to cut some copper flat bar into smaller pieces. Then I could stamp them and sell them at the hugely inflated prices they are going for on ebay.

A lot of people on in our area (including us) use such bars as grounds. I guess I'll go around town pulling them up tonight if they are going for about $100 each! Just joking folks.

I know you wouldn't do that, but it wouldn't surprise me if someone tried it.
I read an article not long ago about copper plumbing burgulary being on the rise along with copper prices. There are people who will break into a house and rip out copper pipes and tubing to sell as scrap. It used to be, the article said, that it mostly happened with old abandoned houses, but has been happening with new unfinished construction and even houses people are currently living in. The worst part is it costs the owners thousands of dollars in damages for the criminal to make a few hundred bucks at the scrap yard.

If anyone wants to buy copper like this bar just check the phone book in your area for a metal dealer. There is a large metal dealer not far from where I live that sells everything from aluminum, steel, copper, and I think he may even deal in precious metals. This way you can see what sizes they have in stock or maybe get a deal on left over or odd cut pieces rather than him sending them to scrap. Also no shipping charges.

Speaking of homeowners having their houses ravaged for the copper....I had this happen to me in March
The home I am building had just finished being wired but the drywall and exterior doors weren't installed yet. One Sunday night, someone started on the second floor in the back and ripped out about 1/2 of the copper wiring on my second floor before they stopped. It appeared that they were suddenly spooked, because some of the smaller pieces of wire were left dangling or laying on the floor.
It didn't cost me anything, but my homebuilder was pretty really upset me to the point of seeing yellowed. They left the fiber optic, CAT5e and the RG-6 cabling and took only the copper Romex. |
