should I go to the recycler and buy the best kind of whatever they have- like bullion(if they have it) or old pipes? should I just go to the local homebuilding store and buy copper sheets like what you'd use for a roof?

I never used a scrap dealer to buy scrap from. I guess it depends on the dealer and what clean copper they have to sell. |

John Law:
First, Welcome to the forum. I have found this place to be informative and polite, I like it here.
Second, you asked a good qwestion: "Should one buy other forms of copper?"
Well, my answer is yes, but only if you get a good deal on it. I think that useful items, whether copper or not, should be hoarded at this point in history. If peak oil is for real, or if the war with Iran turns out badly, the supplies of some useful items could become dear.
The point of hoarding pennies and nickels is that they are cheap, VERY Cheap! In fact face value is below melt value. This makes the coins (especially pre 1982 copper pennies and all nickels) cheaper thatn "Normal" Everything else is expensive in comparison.

yeah, my problem is it take a TON of sorting to get copper pennies. I wouldn't mind just buying some scrap copper, especially from a recycler. you buy some and then if you really need liquidity most likely you can just go right to the same place. heck, you might even eventually get to know the owner.

Hey Now.
Most scrap dealers that I deal with don't seem to be willing to sell scrap. One reason perhaps is that if they do so it tips off how much profit they make.
If you do find one who is willing, try to buy something called copper buss bars from them. They are used in industry but are like long copper bullion bars.

New copper house wiring and piping might be an interesting way to speculate on copper. I don't follow prices but it makes sense that both would command a premium over melt. |

I agree psi. Sometimes it just makes more sense to buy the finished copper product that will be needed by someone sooner or later.
