So I tried half dollars, and they haven't been too great for me. Then I went to dimes, and just got skunked on two boxes. I'm thinking about doing some nickels later, but I am currently contemplating having my bank order me some quarters. Are they worth my time? What are my chances of finding something? And how much is a box? Thanks.

I'm not a big searcher/sorter. I've only done a tiny bit of searching for copper cents, just one box and wasn't interested in more. But I've looked at all the quarters I get. Never found one. Never. Even a 1965 quarter is unusual.

I think other people will back this up. It's a complete waste of time to search for silver quarters.

Quarter searching offers the lowest silver return of an coin. Half dollars are your best bet.

"Rich," the Old Man said dreamily, "is not baying after what you can't have. Rich is having the time to do what you want to do. Rich is a little whiskey to drink and some food to eat and a roof over your head and a fish pole and a boat and a gun and a dollar for a box of shells. Rich is not owing any money to anybody, and not spending what you haven't got." Robert Ruark

Someone has already been through most of the halves I get. I order from Brinks and I get them from multiple banks. They have green and purple Sharpie "X"s on them. Ticks me off.

Coins continue to get put back in circulation, so there is always circulated coins coming back in, from people who don't know the value. I think dimes would be your best return. I have been averaging 2-3 dimes per $250. 2 silver dimes are equivilent to 1 - 40% half, and cost only 2/5 the price of a half. I have gone thru $2,500 in halves with 0 success. Most of mine were marked also. I think quarters would have little success, partly due to the state quarter program that has pumped huge volumes of quarters into circulation, thius diluting any remaining silver that is still out there.

I may try doing some nickels next week. I'd love to get a buffalo, or some silver war nickels. I'll never forget my parents always getting several rolls of nickels each week, so we could have milk money for lunch at school. Every roll we bought was silver war nickels, and I believe the year was 1970. We ended up spending them instead of saving them. I wasn't really a collector back then. It's a shame we didn't keep them, or understand the value.

I really enjoy pennies, and try to do at least $100 a week by hand. But, pennies usually don't have a lot of silver, and I like getting silver. Ha. So I'll stick with my dimes.

Hi there-

JMO, but quarters and nickels are a sucker bet. I'm just doing dimes and halves from now on. Of course, if a bank has some old-looking CWR quarters, I'll buy them and take a look, but as far as doing them every week- nope.

wags

Only when they CAN'T have it, ......THEN they'll want it.

I love Cents. If you get an UNC box, you win. If you get a regular circ. box, you win. If you get a zinc box, you don't lose....so you still win.

Personally I don't think so. Unlike dimes, Ag quarters are easy to spot. Most of the general public I don't think knows about the 40% halves. Plus they don't circulate anywhere near as much as the quarters so the 90% can slip through the cracks.

I could be wrong though... A stray does pop up every now and then...

Have never done quarters, dimes meh, about 1 per box for me. 1/2's about 1 40, 1 90 per box... I think it depends on what part of the country you are in...

I'm in upper midwest for what its worth.

yep searching quarters for silver would be the biggest waste of time of all. you would be better off searching pennies, selling the coppers and taking the profits to buy silver

I currently have no signature.

I agree with CopperSnake. I used to do a lot of that.. back in the days when you could sell the coppers for a profit.. converted a couple of tons into silver and gold.

For silver hunting I would say quarters would give you the lowest return.. and they are $500 a box, so you can tie up a good chunk of capital if you are not a fast sorter and returner. Best returns are on halves, and then dimes. You will get plenty of skunks in each, but at least if you find a silver half you have something. Another thing you have to consider is dumping.. just like with the pennies. How much is your bank going to like you bringing back multiple boxes of quarters? I have it easy.. as soon as I edge check them I toss them in one of the automatic rolling machines and hit the button. Banks are less reluctant to take machine rolled quarters, and even gas stations and other places don't mind being paid with a few rolls.

I enjoy sorting nickels also.. mostly for the thrill of the hunt. Pennies are still my favorite though.. and the best bang for the buck.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Now selling Copper pennies. 1.6x plus shipping. Limited amounts available.

Quarters are a complete waste of your time. Here are a few reasons why

#1 Quarters are the most used change, therefore many many more people to notice if one is silver and pull it out.
#2 The state quarter progam has most people looking out for the new quarters, therefore a person is most liekly to notice a silver or "older" year quarter and keep it.
