I have heard differnt things regarding this. I have heard one indian head penny for every 250,000 pennies. but what are the odds of finding say a silver half? or a war nickel? or silver quarter?
Thus far I have never seen an indian head penny, but I have only sorted about $200 worth of pennies by hand. And I have found 3 silver halves in the $1200 I have sorted. As for nickels I am at 1 war nickel in $110. general copper pennies roughly 20% and Weaties I am at about 1 for every $4.

Hi there-
There really is no logic, and I've been trying for 1 year to figure the banks out. Customer wrapped rolls tend to be the best sources, but they are not always available, and they are not always a sure thing. Sometimes, you can ask for a bag of counted currency that the banks may have on hand. Bank (Fed) wrapped rolls are the usual source for all of us, and every week is a new adventure. You get boxes with nothing, and you get "hot" boxes once in a while. It's best to have two banks. I consider a good box of halves to have at least 2 90%'s and/or 6 40%s. A good box of dimes will have 2 90%s. A good box of nickels will have at least 1 war. I haven't done pennies in a while, but a good ratio is 20-25% copper per box, with 10-15 wheats. Get used to disappointment.
It's really a labor of love to sort. I don't think anyone here ever got rich by roll hunting, but it's a real thrill when you amass an entire roll of silver coins that YOU found, and no-one else did....
Unfortunately, I think you're getting in the game a little late- lots of banks are charging 10c/roll for their coins now, and it's tougher in general to get and, most importantly, GET RID of coins.
Go slow. Don't burn yourself out. NEVER deposit your coins in the same bank you get them from. Remember, this is long term.
mods, how was that overview?
Sincerely,

I love Cents. If you get an UNC box, you win. If you get a regular circ. box, you win. If you get a zinc box, you don't lose....so you still win. |

Sounds like a good overview, but the ten cent charge per roll is news to me. |

Maybe contact vending machine owners and buy their dimes off of them by the pound. So many pounds of clad dimes should = so many dollars. |

most of don't have to pay for rolls.
I dump pennies via $50 bags unrolled and halves $1000 bags unrolled.
40% silver are far easier to find.
a few days ago I came across 89 rolls. Teller said someone had turned them in and already took the silver out. I still found 6 40%. so that is 1 ever 15 rolls. also found some NIFC and lots of low mintage almost uncirculated that I stash away.
I haven't been searching halves that long but you should find a couple of things worth keeping in every box.
and count yourself fortunate. I'm in Atlanta where we average only about 15% copper. Most folks get more than 20%. |
Buying: Peace/Morgan G+ at $15.00 copper cents at 1.3X wheat pennies at 3X

As far as halves go, pickings have been slim lately, but don't let that deter you (unless you're in my area ). I have done very well I think, but I was moving anywhere from $1500 to $2000 per week until recently. Now I'm stuck with $1000 per week. |

Its hard to say about the indain head pennies. Some have never found any and some (like me) have found some without sorting very much. I found 3 of them withing my first 50000 coins!
As for silver quarters they are RARE in the wild. Quarters and the most circulated coins and also everyone is now looking at the quarters because of the state quarter program going on. DONT waste your time looking through them
I dont search through nickles because personaly I think thats a waste of time. All that work and you find a 40 cent war nickle...I think other coins are better with your time
I dont search through dimes anymore either, but 1-2 every box or every other box seems to be the going rate. That was about the rate I was getting when i searched through some boxes a few years ago.
Halves...Halves are my thing. The key to half dollars is to find small towns that have banks in them. These small towns dont get TONS of customers like the big banks do and they also most likely are branch banks. This all means that they dont like to pay to get rid of there coins. Since half dollars are really only circulated by us half hunters, most of the time those halves just sit in the vault for a long time. The longer the halves have been sitting there, the better your chances are! Fed rolls occansionaly hold a few 40% and once in a while 90% and very rarely HOTBOXES. So if you can find small towns with smaller banks, otherwise just do what you can and hope someone brings in some halves so you can have customer wrapped rolls.
This is just my 2 cents though. I know others have differnt opinions because I know many on here sort through dimes and nickles |
