I have just got into the penny sorting hobby. I have bought a Ryedale and sorted over 10,000 pennies in the last 2 months. Have talked to Andy a few times through e-mail. Put a golf ball in with the pennies and that keeps them knocked down and flowing. Also have the back of the Ryedale jacked up anout 1/2 inch to help them flow off of the shute. I work for a grocery store and my head bookkeeper is ordering 4 boxes of pennies for me with every order. I get about $200.00 a week this way. My bank orders whatever I want cause I have 5 accounts with them and a Mortage, plus one of the ladies loves my 5 year old daughter. My dump bank is across the street. A CU with a very fast machine ( no charge) I can dump 250.00 pennies in about 10 minutes. After they change bags the 3 bags. I ave been rading alot and now I feel like I need to jump in the conversations. Some of ya'll are funny and I look forward to getting to know ya'll more. 36 / male/ single / 1 child.

Welcome to copper sorting and hoarding. Some here will even tell you they find an occassional Indian Head in there pennies. They don't think rationally however.

"Rich," the Old Man said dreamily, "is not baying after what you can't have. Rich is having the time to do what you want to do. Rich is a little whiskey to drink and some food to eat and a roof over your head and a fish pole and a boat and a gun and a dollar for a box of shells. Rich is not owing any money to anybody, and not spending what you haven't got." Robert Ruark

Jumped in with two feet with the Ryedale, I like that. Welcome to the party. Glad to have you.

Welcome - we like people who post. Nice setup you got - makes me jealous. Some of us have to roll pennies, and do drivebys because all our orders come up new/sorted for the mint.

Well here is some more things to ponder. I went to pick up my four boxes from work. What do I get? 4 boxes of BU 2008 Philadelphia pennies. I found a penny one day as I was dumping rolls. A penny that looks normal on the heads side but hollow on the other side. Found out it is part of a magic trick, something about hiding a dime in it. It sounded real funny when it fell into the bucket and took me sorting through the coppers looking for wheaties to find it.

Oh yeah I live in S.C. People at the banks ask " Are you sure you want that many pennies?" I have been very lucky. I have two banks that will order as many boxes that I want and my work orders at least 4 boxes a week for me. One bank is in town that gets them from the Fed. The other is 15 miles away. Across the state line. Same bank different branch. Gets theirs from Brinks. The dump bank is a CU and the people who have been taking out the full bags are very nice and don't care that I am dumping my pennies. I asked one lady how many times a day does she have to empty the machine. She told me that that was her 3rd time that day at 3 p. m. on a monday. So I am thinking 3 times at 3 bags each time. 10 bags of pennies a day? I need to start buying bags on fridays and dumping on mondays.

I like getting bags. It really speeds things up if you don't have to break open all those rolls. I have several banks that let me purchase the bags they take off the self serve coin counters they have in their lobby.

COPPER - the "poormans" precious metal!!!

SELLING - $100.00 face copper shipped to you for $189.00 machine rolled or bagged - PM me if your interested.

So the counters have 5 different bags or 1 for each denomination?I never thought of it before but I guess it makes sense

All I know is there are 3 bags for pennies. This machine is big. Like a coinstar but better. There is a door on both sides of the machine. There are about 8 bags on each side. 1, 5, 10, 25, 50 , 1.00 coins. The pennies have the most and i would assume the quarter has 2- 3 bags. I'll take a peek next time. This machine is super fast. I can dump 25000 pennies in 10 minutes and that includes them changing bags.

Yes- but there are many different types of machines.
Bag machines are counter/sorters.
There are other machines which are more common here that only count but don't sort. They dump all coins into a common bin on wheels.

You can configure bag machines to send different denominations at different quantities to whichever bag.
The best is the newer De La Rue Quick Change that has 12 bags (6 per side)

You must be logged in to see this link.
The ones I use have 4 penny bags so you can dump $200 before a bag change assuming they are empty.

They are also fast - $100 in pennies takes less than 5 minutes.
I have familiarized myself with them to help the tellers and can fix most problems that occur - they are self diagnosing and tell you what to do. Also very accurate and tend to count dirty and mutilated coins readily.

Oh by the way- Welcome Slick! - sorry for hijacking the thread!

Beer is my currency.

Yeah that is the machine I use at the CU. I love that thing. There are several branches of this CU in my town and 2 other branches have coin machines but they are smaller and slow (40.00 in about 20 minutes) I try to always have more than $150.00 of pennies since it only has three bags for pennies. They have to come switch bags and I get a chance to peek in the trash bucket. That is how I got two dollar coins. Not silver but since dollar coins are going in the trash bin it is just a matter of time before I find a silver dollar.

At the credit union where I work, we have a older self-serve machine that puts mixed coin in 4 bags. At another place, they use a newer Cummins machine that has a bag for each denomination. I peek at the bag tickets and take my choice. When I see 100+ half dollars, I've hit (usually) a jackpot. Mostly it is pennies and quarters. I've only found one silver dime, and no penny older than 1940s. Lots of JFKs make up for it..
