Question:
Why is a silver eagle larger than a silver maple?
I have some of each, so I can actually compare. The eagle has a slightly larger diameter, like by 1.5-2mm. I cannot detect any difference in thickness.
I looked at wikipedia and both are supposed to be one troy ounce of silver. Also, both are darn near close to pure, close enough that the size difference should be imperceptible.
What gives?

Those numbers indicate a volume of 3972 mm^3 for the eagle and 3731 mm^3 for the maple leaf, which means the eagle is still 6% larger. |

Actually I get 3858 mm^3 for the Eagle and 3731 mm^3 for the Maple. Difference of about 3% figuring the volume that way. However, that's only an estimation, since the coins are not perfect cylinders, but rather have raised images and lettering and reeded edges. You need to use water displacement to get a truly accurate measurement of the volume. |

You're right. I goofed on the calculation somehow the first time. |

That is a tiny difference. That would make up for only a fraction of a percent of any total volume difference. |

That's why I put a question mark after my comment, yet what about the metals added for durability, etc.? Maybe different as well? |
