I've started sorting some dimes the last month for silver. Sorted about $400 so far.
I've found 1 - 1960 Rosie 1 - 1939 S Mercury
Unfortunately 14 Canadian dimes, 1 Norweigian dime, and 1 zinc penny. Also shorted 5 dimes in total.
All of these were customer wrapped rolls. I will be getting a Brinks box this week.

Hi there-
A good ratio is 1-2 silver dimes per $250 box.
Yeah, I've gotten ripped off on coin totals as well. I call it "leakage." I usually get nailed when I drop off coin, and I KNOW there's $500 worth of coin, and the teller comes back and tells me "498.50." There's not really much you can do. It's the price we pay for living the dangerous life! : D

Only when they CAN'T have it, ......THEN they'll want it.
I love Cents. If you get an UNC box, you win. If you get a regular circ. box, you win. If you get a zinc box, you don't lose....so you still win. |

The Mercury was a nice find.
I have been saving all my Canadian coins as a possible hedge against the US dollar. If that proves not to be prudent, I'll just roll and release back into the wild...
Make sure you check them for Ag. I almost disposed of a '65 that was bright and shiny and did not have that whitish color Ag usually has.

None of the Canadian have been silver. I have a guy who gives me the current exchange rate for the Canadians that he takes back over the border. I will wait until the rates are better for me.

I'd love to hear how you do on the Brinks box. I have been doing terrible with halves from Brinks, and I am going to move to either dimes or nickles.

I have never looked through dimes. When you do, do you do the simple side search or do you actually look at the dates? If so, what dates of dimes should be kept? Thanks.

For Canadian dimes - Anything 1967 or earlier is silver. 1968 could be either silver or non-silver.

My dimes for the month so far have got ME 17 Rosies and one Merc- that is from 20 boxes, 3 of them boxes were solid 2008D's. Every time I buy them I wish I hadn't but if I didn't I'd wish I had. HH Mark

Ok with the dimes what do you do with the box after you search it? One of my banks gets brinks boxes with the clear wrappers. I have not bought any yet but searching should only take 3 minutes.

If they do come in clear wrappers, will banks take those rolls back? Does it differ per bank?

I have a credit union with a free coin sorter/counter, which works similar to CoinStar. No charge to members, but 8% fee for non-members.

Got my first two boxes today. First box yeilded a 1977 Canadian, 1954 and 1960 Rosie. I was happy. The next box was nothing but uncirculated. Please check the buy/sell/trade forum if you are interested.

Bought 3 boxes all with the same inspection date stamped on the bottom...Jan 25, 2009.. which is weird since thats in the future. Thats happened before though, I figure they misset the date stamping machine. I figure they got the Jan date right and I also figure that should be a good date to get a box of any coins. November and december are prime months for people to turn in their collections for xmas expense. More evidence is the 3 silver roos I have in the first 13 rolls of the first box. I got a 50 centimes year 1937 in the previous box. Anyone know if thats worth much?

I got $100 worth of dimes the other day and found my first wild silver, a 1965 canadian! Pretty nice looking coin too. Never really got into the dimes before but I think I will be searching them more now.

Went through another $200 from the same bank last night and found another 80% dime (1957) and 19 american. In one bundle someone had labeled the rolls by year (04-08) which was interesting. I wonder why someone would go to the trouble of hand sorting by year and then return the labeled rolls to the bank?
