I just bought a $25 box of pennies from the local inner city bank and was shocked when I started to unroll them. Customer rolled coins were all so filthy. Most were caked with some type of white substance (I thought it might be road salt but there are way too many). They stunk like an ashtray and were sticky also. The whole box. Pennies were smashed and flattened, some were painted. I wish I never bought the box because I'm not even getting any good percentages. I did get 7 dimes and 9 wheats but they are also filthy. anyone ever get a box like this?
I have to go shower now.

I've only been doing this a few weeks but I agree there are sure days when you wonder where in the heck the pennies have been sitting. I'm waiting for the day when I get the local zoo's deposit of pennies from the duck pond.

You know, I never thought of that. Maybe they came from a fountain or wish pond?

One of the first batches that I ever got were really bad. I think that they came from someone who metel detected them. The good thing was that that was where I got my first IH. It was a 1883 in half way decent shape.

A few weeks back I bought on the spot about $130 of CWRs as a customer was unloading them at a branch. Not too many wheats were in the batch but plenty of pre-82's. There were many rolls with hair in them and gunky crud. Not as bad as your batch there CuproNickle, but I am put off by how gross people can be by turning in dirty coins that someone else wants. I feel like it is waste of time to clean the coins off given that they are worth a penny each but I hate to pass on to someone some gunky skunk, so in most cases I gather the gross ones and throw in a dish with lemon juice in it and let them sit for a day to clean off under running water after.

I think everyone has gotten skanky nasty pennies at one time or another.
7 dimes in one box, that would more than make up for it with me...

These pennies I have seem contaminated with road salt. I can taste it on my lips after dumping them out of the rolls. They were without doubt the nastiest batch of pennies I ever sorted. I got about 18% copper with 9 wheats and 7 dimes that were black from whatever corroded them. I also found a 2001 English 1 Penny coin. They really stink and I think they are a combination of road finds, ashtray change and God knows what else. I have around 150 coppers that are so bad that I will try the soak soulution you suggested. Otherwise they go back with the zinc. These inner city banks can be great sometimes but not today. I have been getting lots of dimes though.

Yes, that was a nice find but they were covered in black tar like crap that stunk like the inner city crack head bank that I bought them from. I had to shower when I was done sorting these. I'm not kidding. The dust that came out from them made my house dirty and I had to blow my nose to get the dust out of it. When I dumped the rolls, one by one, a cloud of dust came out of them. My cloths stink, my house stinks. It was bad. I should have taken a photo before I rolled them all back up. You wouldn't believe it unless you saw it.
This is the same bank I got over 1000 wheats from so I go there now. Bullet proof glass means they have to hand them out the door to me with the armed guard watching nevously. Inner city banks are the place to score the wheats! This was my lowest score to date with only 9 wheats.

I had a bag once that looked like it was mixes with very fine Florida beach sand. I just dumped the whole thing.

Live free or die. Plain and simple.
"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your council or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen." - Samuel Adams |
