Halves...26 CWRS Totals:

While visiting this town, I went to 6 banks. I had some success. Here's the results out of 26 rolls...

64-5
65-3
66-10
67-7
68-18
69-4

I have a lot better luck with CWRS (Customer Wrapped Rolls) than I do these halves I order from the fed.

I was thinking about searching some halvess for silver. But it seems like you guys don't get enough to make it worth the time.

So is it worth the time or not? Seems like a big investment of time to get a little silver when your time is worth potentially a lot more than that much silver.

Working at a paying job will produce a known result. Sorting halves, as one can see, produces mixed results at best. Like you said, it all boils down to what your time is worth.

To others, it's the thrill of the hunt...

Sorting halves will almost never pay for your time. It is a hobby that generally interests those interested in collecting coins in the first place. I enjoy the treasure hunt, plus trying to find nice specimens for collection while watching TV or listening to the radio. However, if my only motivation was to try to make money by finding silver, I would quickly find something else to do. Spending an hour to sort a box just to find one 40%er, or no silver at all as often happens, doesn't make sense if monetary reward is the only goal.

Rich is not owing any money to anybody, and not spending what you haven't got." Robert Ruark

On a whim I got 2 rolls of dimes at our local bank in a supermarket. Not expecting to find a thing, I ended up finding a 1952 Rooselvelt silver dime! Not bad for just 2 rolls. I went back and got 10 more rolls and got skunked.

When you search dimes for silver do you look at each date or just look at the edge of the coins? I started doing the one dime at a time thing and soon got a headache from reading each date. Next bunch of rolls I plan to just edge search, as the silver ones stand out like a sore thumb.

Non-dirty silver sticks out like a sore thumb. Unfortunately, most of my finds at least have been dirty, and I did not find them in my initial edge checks.

I edge check, but use a magnifing glass and good lighting. I have found several I know I would have missed using the naked eye. Those dirty ones can blend right in with the Cu and Ni stripes.

I almost dumped a 1965 canadian dime (sailboat). Something prompted me to look up the composition and its 80% silver. I now know that there was silver in canadian dimes through 1968.

$500 in dimes searched last night/today. I found three silver dimes, all in good shape:

'51 Roosevelt

'57 D "

'44 Mercury

I think this is my second Mercury I found in the wild. My average silver find, based upon these boxes, is one per $170 searched.

Picked up a loose 2007 P Kennedy half yesterday also. I will add that to the total below.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. Let's be sure and add our skunks to the total searched. This thread should give us a good idea of average wild silver per box by year end.

That reminds me. I did a drive-by yesterday at a bank branch I have not been at for many weeks. I asked for halves. The teller only had loose ones. As I looked through them, I saw one of them had the faint remnants of what I believe was the very distinctive magic marker writing I used on some halves a few months back to mark them. Now, I can be just wrong and assume that the marked half came to this bank via some local gas station I used halves at. Maybe I dumped a roll of halves with some marked ones there? I do not remember. My gut thought when I saw the marked coin yesterday was that another sorter got my rolls at a dump bank or such and here it was full-circle.

What I will probably do is mark coins separately for either machine bag dump or bank paper-rolled deposit. I already once got back a few of my coins with my mark on them a few weeks back in the Brinks boxes. That is slightly unnerving. My observations are that a few others in my area are searching for halves. I think there is one person who checks daily all the banks along the highway I live near, doing a 30 mile route at least. I can not keep up with that nor do I care to. My wife and I are trying to figure out though how someone who might be ordering many thousands of dollars a week of halves is getting rid of them.

All this searching makes me wish I started years ago. A good number of us might say that. Oh well. I can only guess that this is long-term, steady-as-she-goes thing.
