I have just finished hand sorting a 5 gallon water jug of pennies I have saved for the past 15 or so years. I wound up with 4 boxes (50 rolls each, 10,000 total) of copper. Phase two will be the continued hoarding and rolling of change as I get it. My goal is to fill 50 boxes with copper. This may take a while.

I'm confused. Why would anyone spend time and money placing coins in a roll and then in boxes? the boxes and paper rolls cost money. If they are to be taken to a bank, just put them in a bag. If saving them for something in the way of value, the paper they are rolled in may contain chemicals that will slowly tarnish them if the wrong type of paper is purchased. If the boxes contain Sulfur, they too would help ruin the value of the coins. If they are to be melted down for the Copper, the paper would not be welcomed by a smelter since they pay for Copper, not paper and it would have to either be torn off or buned off. I myself would rather spend time washing my car than wrapping coins in paper rolls. Of course to each his own.

I'm clearly not taking them to the bank to cash for face value. If I was, my bank requires that they be rolled anyway, if I took them to a Coinstar, I would be charged a fee. As far as the wrapper damaging the coins, I have seen bank rolled coins from the 50's and 60's and they look just fine. If anything the sulphur would tone the coins which is not harmful. As far as why, I have 10,000 cents rolled and boxed and it makes storage easy. My plan is not to sell them to a smelter, but as "junk copper" much like 90% silver coins. Of course, it all depends on the price of copper. Personally, I'm not going to worry about how much wrappers and boxes cost (an additional .70 cents per box).
