Q: Where has all the Nickel gone? A: Into Stainless Steel.
I build decks, fences, etc. as a part of my job. 20 years ago these were put together with steel mails that are all rusted out now. Today, people use Stainless Steel Screws for this purpose.
Look around, the front door of my refigerator is Stainless Steel. Stainless is used in huge qwantites in Architecture, Industry, and basically everywhere. You must be logged in to see this link.
Also, Some of it has wound up in my basement.
Few deny the logic of peak oil You must be logged in to see this link. But many people who accept the notion of peak oil cannot beleive that Peak Nickel is also occuring.
As to your graph, I see a WEIRD Blip in Late Sept. 2006.
I'm currently more bullish on Nickel than even SIlver, precisely because of the graph that you posted.

I think I spot a suspicious and glaring anamoly.
Look at the 6 month LME Nickle stocks chart You must be logged in to see this link.
Is there a glaring weirdness around Sept 25th, 26th, 27th, 2006?
What could have caused that?

Yes., If you remember, supplies last summer got so low that the LME defaulted on delivery and enacted a price cap delivery default fines. No nickel got delivered, and so the available stocks were effectively zero. I imagine it will happen again this sumer - I used the one year chart because Jan 31 is traditionally the point of the year where supplies are at their highest, and consumption is at its lowest. Last year was no different, with nearly 40,000 tonns available on the LME. This yearm however, we are hovering around the 4,000T mark, and about to enter another season of geometrically increasing demand.
It's not going to be pretty.
Oh, wait, for those of us iwth Nickel holdings, it's totally going to be pretty.

Me too (yesterday. I'm torn between putting my FRNs into nickels or silver now though. I guess I'll do both for a while.

The nickel is going to China. Same with all the scrap copper and aluminum. |

For awhile it was in the headlines China was buying by the ton defunct coinage from all the countries that switched over to the euro. The only condition was the coins had to be waffled so as to make them unusable for means of trade within China. Switzerland had tons of coins made of 99% nickel and some South American countries also had high nickel containing coins.
