Hi all-
I feel embarrassed that I didn't know this earlier, but I found out that Mexican 100 peso coins have silver in them- about the size of a US quarter's worth!
Might be worth it to take a weekend down there and convert a couple hundo in US currency into those coins?????
(Not more than you can conveniently carry in your pockets, though. I understand the "policia" down there have their own agenda.)

do 100 Peso's commonly circulate?
I don't know of any modern coinage in circulation that contains silver. Can you pass along your source to us all? I'd love to find out more, I'll be down near the boarder in a couple months. |

Hi there-
Oops- I accidentally typed an extra zero- I meant that the ten pesos has about a quarter's worth. I guess the 100 pesos has even more silver! But, the 100 pesos might not be cost-effective in the US-peso exchange rate.

Well, if 10 pesos = $0.75 USD, then the sterling variety 10 peso coins would be $4.50/ozt silver. If that's the case, something tells me there wouldn't be too many of the silver variety circulating (notice they say there are two varieties...sterling and copper/nickel/zinc). |

Interesting and helpful link on composition of mexican coins. I don't know what circulates as I've not been in Mexico for quite a while. |

I have some of the 10 peso silver coins, as well as some of the old 1 peso silver coins. I also have 25 peso silver coins they did for the 68 Olympics in Mexico. I have never been to Mexico. The current circulating 10 peso coin is copper-nickel. |

The 10 peso coins changed in 1997 containing no silver. Until 2000 the 20 peso (1/4 oz) and 50 peso (1/2 oz) still contain silver but they are very hard to find. The new 100 peso coins are commerative coins and usually have a steep mark up and only contain 1/2 oz. The 100 peso is the only coin still made with silver. You can find all the coins here. As a foreign coin enthusiast, I can attest that this is the most correct statement in this thread on the topic of circulating Mexican silver. |
