Edit: So I picked up a couple more $25 boxes and I haven't sorted them yet, but the "ends" include several coppers, so I'm already happy :)
This was another bank, so I'll have them as my "primary" going forward :)
The style of the boxes was different so they apparently use a different service.
I've been sorting pennies very small time for a while. I generally get a few rolls a week from the bank or grocery store.
I've decided, much to my wife's chagrin, to step it up, so I went and got a $25 box of pennies.
Of the 50 rolls at least 45 of them were 100% 2008's in average BU condition. All told 4 "keepers"!
Are $25 boxes always total duds?
If so, how do you get bulk sortables?
I'm in Atlanta, Georgia if that matters.
Thanks in advance oh wise Roll Hunters.

| Well, here in California I buy about 3-4 boxes per week and none have been mint "duds"...yet. However, half of the time when I go to the grocery store and buy a few rolls of pennies, they will be 2008 p+d BU rolls. Based on reading around here on realcent it is normal to get duds like that, barrytrot. Just return for others(hobby cant fail!) Really no way to order or tell the difference between brinks boxes, anyway good luck and hope you enjoy this forum. :) |

barrytrot, first off welcome to the site. First one box. Then two.... Duds happen. Boxes around me,(Missouri), tend to be lower percentages than bags but rarely duds. I say keep what you can and "change" the rest. Good luck and keep it up!

| Hey barrytrot, welcome!!! It's all hit or miss here in Ohio. I tend to have better luck when I keep trying different banks. Although I've been lucky to not have a real dud box yet. I say keep shopping around, my friend. |

Welcome to the forum barrytrot. Just get more boxes.. some of them are bound to be sortable. I usually get 24 boxes at a time. I have gotten large quantities of shiny ones in some of my boxes also.. but that is ok.. I like the shiny ones also. If your shiny ones are P mint I would be interested in buying them for a small profit to you. You can ship 3 boxes of pennies in a flat rate box.
If I remember correctly Atlanta is a lower copper percentage area. I would also expect to see more new coins in that area versus other areas because it has more commercial business. Try sample boxes from several different banks. The amount of new or old coins you get will vary by bank.. not all banks use the same coin service. You might try getting a box from a bank that used Brinks wrapped rolls.. the plastic wrapped coins.. these tend to have less new coins in them. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.
Now selling Copper pennies. 1.6x plus shipping. Limited amounts available. |

Interesting info! I'm not going to move just for better copper rates, although I did think about it for a second :)
Thanks a lot guys. I'll get some more boxes today and see how it goes.
I've opened a lot of individual rolls with between 8 and 12 per roll (16% to 24%) with 8 being the "mode".
On a side note, I picked up the half dollars they had at the bank also and the teller almost gave me the Ike dollars for 50 cents each until I told her, "those are dollar coins."
It was still a great deal since 1 of the dollars was a Peace dollar and the others were in good condition as well.
The halves were good also, with 10 40% halves out of $50 worth. |

| With finds like that on halves, I would look at all of the local banks. Those were some good finds. Congrats and welcome to the site. |

A Peace dollar from the tellers drawer... That's a club with few members. Congrats.

what you will want to do next is get a shipping scale capable of doing atleast 20 pounds. That way you will know if it is a dud before you ever open the box.
It is also a good idea to have a couple of boxes in "reserve" so if you get skunked, like you did, you will still have something to sort.
You might also want to ask the banks to hold CWR's for you. They tend to have a higher %. |

What would the scale show if it was all duds?
Also, is there an accepted "courteous protocol" for asking my local bank to hold the CWR's for me?
Do I just say, please hold them, I will be here every Wednesday. For example?
Thanks for all the help. I love this site.
It is good see other people obsessed with finding pennies. My wife thinks I'm crazy. |
