Buy "roll your own" tobacco and papers. It will save you a sh!@load of money. I have smoked roll your owns since I was 13. I currently get 3/4 of an oz of tabacco and 36 papers for like 1.70. That's a pack and a half of smokes for less that 2 bucks. Bigger cans are available 8 oz with 200 papers for 8-10. That's a carton of smokes. Pipes if you can't roll, or anticipate trading to non rollers.
If you have a bucket and some jars you could consider trying your hand at applejack. Get your juice from whatever way you can, fresh, canned, etc. Ferment it with some yeast, then when its good, freeze it and pull off the ice. Alcohol doesn't freeze, so whats left is stronger. Keep fermenting and freezing and you can end up with something close to moonshine levels. It is also a process that is distinctly NOT distilling so it doesn't violate the laws governing things like stills and how much a year you can make. Store in mason jars. |

Kurr, how long does the fermented apple juice/cider have to age before it's drinkable? I've heard you have to let it sit for a few months or so to let it mellow out a bit. Do you use regular old grocery store yeast or do you use wine or champagne yeast? I've made rootbeer before and the yeast recommended was champagne yeast to keep the yeast flavor as clean as possible.

You used yeast to make rootbeer? If so, it wasn't a softdrink. As for yeasts, you definately want brewers yeast, not baking yeast. Baking yeast will work, but the taste leaves a lot to be desired. Given the sugar content of apple juice, beer yeast would not ferment it entirely, and leave some sweetness in the finished product. Champagne yeast will ferment more completely, giving a drier finished product. Either type is available from homebrew stores, look for beer or wine making in the yellow pages or on the web. They come in dried form (cheaper) or liquid cultures (more pure), the dried type would work fine.

| 50 count boxes of .22 cartridges. These cost very little, but if TSHTF, they might be worth their weight in gold. |
"Rich," the Old Man said dreamily, "is not baying after what you can't have. Rich is having the time to do what you want to do. Rich is a little whiskey to drink and some food to eat and a roof over your head and a fish pole and a boat and a gun and a dollar for a box of shells. Rich is not owing any money to anybody, and not spending what you haven't got." Robert Ruark

Here is an idea- wind up watches, cheap Timex found at yard/garage sales, flea markets, church sales. The reason, if button batteries become unavailable wind up watches will be the only kind of watch that will work. Button batteries may last a year or two in the package, but after that they tend to get weak or die. concerning cigarettes and roll your own- If you are interested, here are a few cigarette rolling machines- You must be logged in to see this link. Even if you are not interested, it is still interesting to see that there are machines that will do the rolling for you.
I know some prefer to roll their own, though some smokers don't have the skill to do so and would prefer a smoke that looks like it came out fo the pack. |
