Hi all,
I don't smoke, but I know a lot of people do- What is the shelf life of cigarettes and cigars? Can smokers tell if a pack of cigs is/was old?
Will definitely be a handy barter item- same with booze!!

Only when they CAN'T have it, ......THEN they'll want it.
I love Cents. If you get an UNC box, you win. If you get a regular circ. box, you win. If you get a zinc box, you don't lose....so you still win. |

| yes, you can tell if a pack has gone stale. But I don't know how long until it does. |

Bang on I am a smoker too. I tried the patch but they never stay lit long enough.

No offense, but I think hoarding stuff you will actually use beats hoarding something you will definately not use. Tobacco does get used as "currency" in jail though... so it has pretty good credentials as an established alternative barter medium.
I've never smoked and will never smoke - I hear it is more dangerous then sucking on zinc pennies or comtracting the wild indian pathogen |

| If you have room in a freezer keeping some tabacco would be a good idea. |

I smoked from the age of 15 to 32. When do they become stale? Thats gonna be a gradual declining quality thing. Its not a "good on day 456" and "bad on day 457" type thing. On the other hand, I think that there is probably one particular cigarette that at some point in a life of smoking initiates the cancer mutating ability to overwhelm the body's defenses.

| LOL, I might have to barter with nickelless when tshtf. Roll your owns is about all I have ever really smoked. 1.80 for 3/4 an oz with 36 papers, is like 1.80 for a regular pack and a half. Carton size amount is 8oz with 200 papers for about 8-10.00. Lot less toxic than ready mades for the masses, MUCH cleaner chemical/additive wise. I smoke a pack, pack and a half of even lights, my chest hurts. Roll your owns I smoke all day, filter-less without a problem. |

If stored properly in a humidor, tobacco and cigars should store indefinitely. People have smoked 50 year old cigars that were stored properly and said that they were still good. Dried out tobacco and cigars can be re-humidified, but they will lose some quality.
I am not sure what happens to cigarettes if you try to store them in a humidor. How does the paper hold up? Does the paper react with the tobacco?
Anyhow I would hoard the tobacco and papers separately to be on the safe side...
