Near where I live is an antique shop that sells jewelry (old and new) and they take donations of almost all kinds (anything that might sell and is in very good condition.)
Today in the display case was a two coin set from the Cayman Islands, consisting of one proof silver coin and one proof gold coin.
The price seemed reasonable for a gold and silver coin, what with the scarcity of gold and all, so I decided to buy it.
The price was $450 for the set, the gold coin weighs .365 troy ounces pure gold the silver coin weighs 2.083 troy ounces but is sterling silver, or 1.926775 pure silver.
current melt value, $370.34 for the set
Not a bad price, though I would have been happier if I could have bought the set for melt value.
The gold coin in the set is about the size of a US $20 Gold Coin while the silver coin is about twice the size of a US Silver Dollar.
If anyone out there can find a set similar to this one for $350 or less, don't hesitate to buy. You won't be disappointed.

Melt value is closer to $320.00 for both by my calcs, but when buying you pretty much can't look at melt because the of disconnect in the physical market.
There is always a premium for proofs, so it's hard to say what the true value is, but if you feel good about the deal, well then it's a good deal for you.
Now not buying proofs at my dealer. With what his premiums have been as of late. My cost for non US bullion would be $50 over spot/oz for gold. He is still selling SML's for $15 ea.
So I would pay
($816 + 50)*.365 = $316.00 for the gold $15 * 2 = $30 for the SML's
For roughly $350.00 give or take a few bucks.
THis would be for NON proofs though. |
