I don't know why I hadn't thought of this earlier. You go to the bank and pick up your box of halves. You take it home and run your metal detector with a silver discriminator, over the box. It shows 0 silver. Then you don't have any reason to open the box.

In the little experience I have with metal detectors, I have found that discriminators are not that accurate or reliable.
I was doing some detecting up north last summer on a beach that had a high iron content with a higher grade White's detector. I had to turn it off, was getting way too many false readings.
I would imagine an Ag coin buried amongst clad coins would have the same problems.
I don't think a consumer grade detector would even be capable of that kind of precision.

I'd miss out on all those proofs! (24 so far) |

5 proofs so far, but I think it may pick up on the 90%, but deffinetly could miss the 40%, unless there was a cluster of them together. |

I thought all kennedy proofs were part silver? What bluegill said makes sense. It would be easy enough to do a test. Take one 40% half and place in a marked roll, then put that roll in among 49 other rolls (those that are to be returned to the bank) with no silver, and see if it worked. But I am inclined to agree with bluegill. I have a metal detector but it doesn't have a silver discriminator on it. |

Nope. There are silver proofs and non-silver proofs.

Live free or die. Plain and simple.
"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your council or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen." - Samuel Adams |

As far as I understand it:
The really good metal detectors would be able to tell the difference. But, put something on top that your trying to block of something your trying to find and the metal detector will likely ignore the entire signal. In other words, it would sense the metal your trying to block unless the silver is laying right on the top or on the edge of the box. |
