Is it me, or does it seem that if you sell coins on Ebay, you'd probably get better bids if you put your coins in 2x2 paper holders? As I look at auctions on Ebay for coins, at least the appearance of a coin being sequestered in a sealed-type display creates a little more appeal than seeing a coin just shown on a table cloth and described as being BU condition. I do not sell coins on Ebay or 2x2 holders either. It is just an observation. Maybe works more for the newbies who see the 2x2's than the experienced collectors.

Can't get a good picture in a holder. When I list them I put them in a 2x2 and write the auction number on it. I hope that doesn't make a difference not taking the pic in the folder.

From a 'packaging' standpoint, I think buyers get a sense of a coin being coveted more when it is in a holder. A coin that is protected by the seller looks more valuable perhaps. Once again, just an observation. I usually end up buying junk silver and bulk wheats on Ebay anyway if I ever buy coins there, so having things in holders is not necessary for me. Probably a good way to gauge whether the 2x2 holder does make a difference is to track auctions to see if common date coins sold loose vs. in a holder vary much in final price.

I'd say that it definately does make a difference for one reason. Most people write their selling price on the holder and then put the bidding lower than that, but higher than the actual price. I once bought two coins marked $55 for 20 total because I knew thats all that they were worth.

There is one seller on EBay that sells mostly Morgan and Peace Dollars. He puts the mintage on the lower left corner, and puts a grossly exagerrated "retail" price on the bottom right corner to make it look like it's worth more than it really is. He also calls just about every coin a key date or semi-key date even a coin like a 1922P Peace Dollar. It's borderline unethical but it works for him and he gets higher bids than other sellers. Genius or scam artist?

the 2x2 makes huge difference. Can double or triple the price. Best for selling at home town, flea markets and the like put a plain worn wheat cent in a 2x2 and people are willing to pay a half dollar for it, but leave them on a plate and they are only willing to spend a quarter.
the package makes all the difference. |
