I stopped at a bank today and asked if they had any halves they would like to get rid of. Two tellers went to the vault and spent a lot of time in there. I could hear them talking. The teller comes out with $9.00 worth of halves........in her hand. Now I ask you, would a bank store less than a roll's worth of halves in a vault? I know it sounds paranoid, but I believe they pulled the silver out of what they had. Of course that would mean there was a roll back there with $11.00 in silver coins. But that's not to uncommon. I have no problem with a bank choosing not to sell me halves. But don't sell me the culls and keep the gravy.
I will call the manager tomorrow. Its not for me you understand. Its for Imsa. He's my adopted son from Gabon. His one remaining parent, his father, was trampled by a rogue elephant while gathering firewood in the jungle. Just kidding, I made all that up. I won't pursue this. I could, and I would succeed, but its to far to drive.

Something else that happened that was kind of interesting. One bank said they had one roll in the vault. They bought it out, I plopped down $10.00, and the teller says you want to open it? I say..no..and then I look at the roll. Its longer and of a lesser diameter than halve rolls. I tell the lady that its not a half roll. As it turns out, it was 25 of those gold plated one dollar coins in a modified halve wrapper. They are kind of freaking out cause they have been shorting someone. I could have profitted $15.00 but that's not enough to compromise my honesty. In my 52 years, I have found 3 wallets. The first had like $5.00, the second $8.00. The third..$85.00. with pictures of a family and children. I returned it cause I like to sleep at night. Here's my take on honesty...

If I found $10.00, I'd return it.
If I found $100.00, I'd return it.
If I found $10,000, I like to think I would return it. :-)

Sounds like you've found your dump bank, Dan.

your quesion on if a bank would store less then a roll of halfs. the answer is yes. Most banks do not store them at all. It counts against the other money they have on hand and since they are not in circulation as much they are usually shipped off the the reserve so they can keep more 1 dollars or such to get out to the customers. stuff in the vault counts against them as they can only hold x amount of dollars.
the $9.00 they handed to you were probably something that someone dropped off one day and being small numbers they did not get them shipped off yet.
them taking a long time in the vault could mean they searched through them or it might mean they had a problem finding the little roll mixed in with the million plus of other currency.

All you have to do is order a box and go home happy.

So I was at the bank the other day picking up another 24 boxes of pennies.. they were sure in the vault a long time.. do you think they might have been searching through all the rolls for the copper ones?

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Now selling Copper pennies. 1.6x plus shipping. Limited amounts available.

Hi Nickeless, great idea? Coinhunter, I confess, I do watch survivor. Hi Gumby, I have been ordering boxes. 7 boxes gave me one (1) 1970 s. A somewhat rare half but not worth a 7 box sort. Anyways, what happened this morning was enough to lift my spirits.
