I got a 1963 Franklin half. There are two more rolls with the same name on them as that of the one that had the franklin! Here we go.

Way to go Dan52! The more you look, the more you find. I hope your luck continues and you get enough for a whole roll quickly. |

I was at a wachovia and asked to buy a box of halves. The teller says...We don't have any actual boxes but we do have $970 in rolls. I asked if she thought they were ones that had been sorted. She said...Oh yeah, thats what they do, they order them and then bring them back. So here's what I did. I asked here to bring me a variety of "different" wrappers, you know how rolls have different designs? I did that to get a sampling from different people. I asked for a $100 worth. None of the ten rolls had any silver. I checked them in the parking lot. So I left $870 dollars worth of halves at that bank. Would you all have done that?
PS: There was only the one franklin. Of course I'm glad to have IT.

Personally, I would have taken them all. I have found that the silver clad (40%) halfs get fairly dirty on the edges and can be missed if you don't date check the rolls. I also have access to a free coin counter that acurately and quickly counts halves, so I have a fairly easy time dumping them.
I don't know your situation, but if you have time, the money to outlay for the coins, and an easy way to dump them, I would never reject any halves. |

| I walked into a BoA branch in Seattle and asked for 1/2s. They had $1500 worth. Sure enough most were sorted and marked, but in the first few rolls there was a 40%er. Not a huge haul, but provided amusement while the wife was off spending my money :) |

| It was tough not getting them. Here's the thing. I was out of town in an area where there were no branchs of the bank in which I keep most my cash. I had about $1000 on me but I had many other banks to try. When the girl said she "knew" that those had been gone through, that was enough to persuade me to just check a portion of them. But believe me, I can appreciate the reasoning in gettin all of them. That would get rid of that little bit of doubt I left with. I will pick up one box tomorrow and two boxes day after tomorrow so good times are ahead....I hope. |

Sometimes you have to go for the rolls even if you think they were a dump. I had a scheduled $500 box pick-up today but the teller told me she forgot to order it. I was OK with that and told her make up that same order for next week on top of another box, hence a $1000 pickup on Tuesday. The wife thinks I am selfish ordering so many coins at once. No, I am nuts I think. Anyway, I shrugged off the forgotten order after having some premonition yesterday that something like that would happen. With quite a few Benjamins in my wallet, I figured I'd do a few drive-bys on the peripheries of a meeting I was on the road for. Bank number one had $13 to sell. A roll plus $3 loose. The roll was a skunk but the $3 produced two 40% coins. OK, I went to my appointment slightly content as the $500 box may have skunked me anyway. After the meeting was over, I headed to bank number two. Timing was perfect. The teller who I like seeing was there by herself. I knew this was the time to ask for the works. Pennies first. She sold me $40 in CWRs. Excellent start. There was more to be picked up on Friday if I wanted. Second, then I asked for the halves. She matter-of-factly said they had $140 in the vault. My first reaction was whether it was a dump. I asked here if it was from one person. She said no. Perfect. I left the bank with CWRs of pennies and 14 rolls of halves. Sat in my car and started to open the halves. Spotted some 40% ones finally. Coins falling out into my sort box, I spotted a Franklin bell. Got home and counted the tally. For both banks today, a grand total of 1 Franklin and 19 various date 40%'ers. Nice finds for an otherwise letdown of a day w/o a $500 box to sort. Point is that I decided to buy up all the rolls at bank #2. Better to get skunked on 14 rolls than 50 I figured. My wife made a drive-by on her day off today and asked a local bank if they had any halves. They said they had $400 worth. This was not my dump bank. Somebody in my neighborhood is dumping. LOL.

| Missed the order. What a let down that would be for me. You handled it better than I probably would have. I just picked up $94 in nickels with $10 of that being CWR's. CWR = Customer wrapped roll? Right? I still like picking up boxes of nickels and dimes but halves are now my main focus. The thing is...I can go through a lot of halves in a hurry. When I have a box of nickels to work at the same time, it makes the "sorting event" last longer. I know. I need to get a life. In another thread folks were talking about how much silver they had. I don't have that much but I think I'm doing pretty good considering I just started hunting halves about 3-4 weeks ago. I have 29 - 64's of which 24 were found in a single roll. I have gotten to where I can tell the sound of a silver coin from the others. When the teller is selling me their loose halves, and they are counting them and letting them drop onto the counter, I can tell the difference in the pitch as they land. I have 110 clad halves. Some of them are in good shape but they have kind of a film over them. Do you or anyone know how its best to clean a coin? Or is it better not to? |

| Junk silver probably has no advantage cleaning or not cleaning unless you want to sell it to someone in spiffy lustrous shape. I have a few crusty 40% halves. I kind of believe the dirtier ones get glossed over by non-alert eyes. That is why possibly some stay in the rolls and do not get removed. You can always clean them later if you want. I don't bother cleaning mine. There are jars of silver cleaners out there where you dip the coin in a solution. Probably can see some examples in our finds of ones that have been cleaned that way. |

Hi there-
Amen to that. I have a couple 40% halves that look IDENTICAL, I mean IDENTICAL to regular halves when viewed on the edge. I've also had two experiences where I've had the pile of non-silver halves in a box, ready to load into a burlap bag to cash in, and I spotted a 40% half in the pile.
I need to slow down!

Only when they CAN'T have it, ......THEN they'll want it.
I love Cents. If you get an UNC box, you win. If you get a regular circ. box, you win. If you get a zinc box, you don't lose....so you still win. |
