I am paying no more than $0.05 in US dollars. I call all over my area within 100 miles and ask if they have any Canadian nickels they will sell for five cents each. Many have been very receptive and said they have many to offer. Americans in general extremely dislike Canadian coinage and basicly would rather throw it in the garbage than admit to even owning some. This presents the perfect buying opportunity for the educated hoarder. I will let you know on the steels I will figure some way to list them on eBay for a private auction and I will send you an email.

Frugi,
You are getting Canadian coin from banks in the US or from coin dealers? And how many phone calls did you have to make?
Thanks |

I have been getting nickels from coin dealers. I have made tons of phone calls; I get the yellow pages out & call every coin dealer listed in the book, I go online to find every coin dealer within 150 miles and call them, I travel frequently and stop at coin dealers throughout the areas I travel. Eastern Missouri is pretty much cleaned out thanks to me, but this is a big country and there is alot of coin dealers that haven't caught on. Prety much NO coin dealer anywhere has caught on (basicly no coin dealer knows the value of Ni and no one knows Canadian nickels are made of pure Ni).

I'm sure you could take a box of canadian nickels to yr bank and they would treat it like a canadian 100 dollar bill and just exchange it for you.

No one will accept Canadian coins of any tyoe anywhere in USA especially at a bank. If I had a bunch I suppose I would use a coinstar because it would accept the cupronickel ones I think. Since I started buying these around Missouri I haven't had an amount of non Ni nickels that was worth trying to get money back for usually my Ni content is 90-95%.

Wow, impressive sort time! I gotta get me one of those machines. I know what you mean about rolling them.. that is probably the most time comsuming part of your operation now. If you lived closer I would be happy to let you use one of my wrapping machines. I just got my second Glory WS-10 wrapper last week (It was going way too cheap on ebay). They roll 10 rolls a minute each. Before getting a wrapper I used one of those Royal Soveriegn coin counters that drop it right into a roll and stop when the roll is complete. Pretty good little machine for a cheap price. If you don't want to pay for the expensive coin tubes you just have it count out a rolls worth into the plastic tube and then wrap it in the coin wrapper you took the coins out of.. unless you hacked up that wrapper with a knife! <G> Much faster than hand counting.

What, and cut my rolling capacity in half? Then I would actually have to change the paper every time I wanted to switch from rolling pennies to rolling nickels. The shipping would probably kill you. You wouldn't believe the amount of trouble I got in when that 100 pound package showed up on the porch. I did see one on a used banking equipment site.. only $1900. There is a current auction on eBay for a Glory WL-5. The reserve is not met yet. I hate those reserve auctions!

Yeah, reserve auctions suck.
I used to buy old typewriters online. Some of the ones from the late 1800's are amazingly heavy to have shipped.

Wow, you are really getting productive not that you have that fancy, smancy machine to do all the work. I gotta get me sum a dem nickels before you get all the good ones. My dad lives just across the border in Port Townsend, WA. I will try to talk him into driving over and getting me a bunch of boxes. I hear nickels are cheaper on your side of the border.. they are certainly more worth sorting through. Anything special a guy should know when trying to buy nickels there? Does a guy just walk into a bank and say "I'd like to buy some nickels, eh?" Are there certain banks that are better to deal with when you want to get several boxes? Are some banks not willing to deal with you if you don't have an account there? Any restrictions on how many nickels he will be allowed to smuggle back across the border to me.. like a $10,000 max? I really like my dad and don't want him to end up in some Canadian prison for smuggling nickels.. that would be worse than me going to prison for melting pennies.

And, to answer yr questions:
"My dad lives just across the border in Port Townsend, WA. I will try to talk him into driving over and getting me a bunch of boxes. I hear nickels are cheaper on your side of the border.. they are certainly more worth sorting through. Anything special a guy should know when trying to buy nickels there?"
Don't go to CIBC banks. Unless you want to get mint rolls."
"Does a guy just walk into a bank and say "I'd like to buy some nickels, eh?""
Pretty much. It's a bank. They do that kind of thing. The eh is optional.
"Are there certain banks that are better to deal with when you want to get several boxes?"
It's more about luck. You can make your own luck by always asking for 2 boxes at each bank. They may compromise and give you one.
"Are some banks not willing to deal with you if you don't have an account there?"
Yes. Act like you're a business customer. Go to the business wicket. Say maybe that you're an american vending machine salesman and you need to get some coins to demo your unit to customers in Canada.
"Any restrictions on how many nickels he will be allowed to smuggle back across the border to me.. like a $10,000 max?"
I am not a lawyer or an american, but I believe your currency limit is $10,000 undeclared. I don't know of any acts prohibiting taking canadian coin across the border, like the american mint regs.
"I really like my dad and don't want him to end up in some Canadian prison for smuggling nickels.. that would be worse than me going to prison for melting pennies."
Don't be dissin' jail.
Ok, peace out y'all.

Thanks for the helpful and humorous hints. I figure if he sounded like a local instead of some South of the Border Hoarder it might increase his chance of gettin' me sum a dem good nickels.
