I do plan to buy one, I just need more time to raise the funds. I enjoy hand sorting anyway.
Wow, those are definately some impressive #'s for non-machine sorting. I don't have a machine yet either. But I will certainly be getting one. I enjoy hand sorting too.. but I don't do the volume that you do. That is why I am getting further and further behind. I buy the pennies in pretty good volume, but I don't sort them fast enough. I figure that Rydale Coin Artist will more than free up enough capital to pay for itself if it allows me to catch up on the 100 boxes of pennies I am behind.

It's funny, I thoguht I'd miss hand sorting when I got my coin artist, but I don't - now I just spend lots of time rolling.

Went through 25 more rolls from the bank. Percentage of pre-1982's were a little lower then what I have been getting. A big bonus was a 1909 v.d.b. !

You just need another machine for that. But that machine costs even more than the Rydale. No, I ain't giving one of mine up.
What do they say when you bring in 20 boxes of nickels to deposit?

Hello Hoarders:
I've been casually hoarding here in Canada, mostly nickels, for about a year. Very minor stuff, but when I found this forum a week ago, I was very inspired by all of you, especially Canadian Nickel, of course. Would consider a Ryedale; I'm working on a magnetic separator too.
A few questions; CN might be particularly interested. My counts seem to mirror your experience so far; very close to 25% pure Ni, 50% cupronickel, 25% stainless. What do you do with all the cupronickel ones? I calculate they have about 6 cents worth of Ni and 4 cents of Cu, so are well above face themselves. Do you save them? In fact, I calculate a random bunch of Canadian nickels, all comers, is worth about twice face. Anyone ever considered just putting lots of them, unsorted, on ebay for Americans to buy and sort? |

Welocme. Here in the U.S. we hoard the 25%-75% nickels. I don't think unsorted would sell very well due to shipping costs, but who knows?

I saw that and thought what a waste. They hand counted 1 million pennies and didn't even bother to sort out the copper ones. It about broke my heart.
Now what would have been a good lesson for the students would have been to teach them the difference between good money and bad. |

I saw that picture and story too. If you are a serious penny hoarder it could make you drool. I had a different perspective on the story. I was thinking.. Hmmm.. Chico is only 3 hours north of me. Maybe I should do the good civic duty thing and loan them 2 or 3 of my Glory counting machines. And then I could be an even nicer guy and cash them out so they wouldn't have to ship them back to the treasury <G> Sooooo many virgin pennies!!!! And then reality set in. Assuming a 25% copper content (250,000 copper cents) the weight is above 3 tons. My poor little Camry sags at the back end when I load it up with one of my regular weekly shipments, so I couldn't realisticly transport that much weight.. no matter how much I want them. But I might take a little trip up that way and stop off at that bank that is helping them process them and see if I can't help them out a little by taking a 1 or 2 dozen bags off their hands so they don't have to incur the shipping costs to send them back to the treasury. I would call the adventure my penny rescue mission. Just doing my small part to "preserve the coinage."

I think I could outsort someone using this device with my pocket scale. Anything that requires you to place the coins one at a time in it rather than having a batch feed will be really slow. I don't think Rydale has anything to worry about here. I also noticed the last person to win one of these was also high bidder on my bag of copper cents I put up for auction. Maybe after a few hours of using the device he decided it was much easier to just buy the copper cents presorted. I just put up another box and bag.. wonder if he will be bidding again.

Small quantity but nice percentage

Welcome to the board, Johnny. Glad to see your first box was a good one. Careful.. this sorting thing can be addicting. I lurked on this board for several months before joining and posting also.

Those are some sweet rolls, Wes. Where did you get them? Or have been holding on to them for several years?
