In northeast Indiana the National city banks(a few of the branches anyway) were letting me buy bags off of the coin machine about 6 months ago.
I haven't been searching much recently, no bags.
So I go into a branch today that I had bought 10's of penny bags and a bag or two of halves($1000 bags) from back in the spring.
The teller goes back to ask ?her boss?? and comes back and says they can't do that anymore. I ask to speak with the manager and she comes out. She says that their new policy is they can't sell bags off the machine anymore. Blah, blah blah, about it's expensive because they use plastic bags. They bag count could be innacurate.
I brought in a bucket and said they can just pour them in it. I said I din't care if the count wasn't exact. I told her that was the main reason I had opened the National city account - because they sold me bags off the machine... She said "maybe we are just catching up with the others" I.e. the other banks won't sell you bags off the machine, now we won't either.
She didn't care.
I hope it is just this one branch. That the branch I opened my account at will still sell bags to me. Will check it out tomorrow or Friday.
Either way, I'll keep the account for a while longer. They can still serve as a great dump bank!!!!!! :-p

Are they afraid of shorting themselves or you? It does sound weird, coins are coins. I have had little resistance on the part of the bank when I asked if they had bags of coins. Most banks think I am weirdo but they do not care much about holding onto coins. I swear though, some tellers must harbor some resentment when I casually order a $500 box of halves. Funny how it seems a luxury to buy coins even though you did not really spend any money at all. |

| I've never had problems with national city. They got rid of all the coin counters at the branches around me because of how expensive they were, not only in bags but also in maintenance. |

I think this is why the bank I picked to generally bank with one of the few with a coin counter near me has gone from free coin counting and sorting for account holders to charging 2% of what you run through the machine
I am not liking seeing more threads with people having difficulty engaging in this hobby...not that it surprises me but it makes me |

A second branch turned me down today. Sounded the same line as from the first branch, though I don't think this branch had been willing to sell me bags before anyway.
BUt the wording or such seemed to be the same: new policy, can't sell the bags...
And the banks don't hold on to any bags. As soon as they are full they sell them and ship them off with brinks. No, banks don't hold on to hoards of coin, unlike us they prefer balances in their books instead of in their vaults. |
