My first attempt at gathering up pre 82 pennies other than just watching my pocket change was today. I bought 6 rolls of pennies and wound up with 2 rolls plus 7 pennies that were keepers, one was a 47 wheatie. The dates were about evenly scattered through the 50's 60's and 70's. I think this would be considered a very successful first run! is this about average on what others are finding? I live in western Kansas the town I got my coins from has a population of less than a thousand people.

The sorting percentages thread is where we usually post our results. (It is getting kind of long now though) But you had a good run there new guy. I'm happy to get 33%.

Yeah...very gooood run !
On the average i find about 9 to 12 keepers out of each roll searched.
I was real lucky once and found 3 rolls of nothing but pre-82's but that was only once.
Dont forget the nickels.............

Oh yea, I picked up some nickels also, I have an old bank bag about half full of them, and one about half full of "junk silver" I find the term "junk Silver" silly, as I am sorting my pocket change I say to my self good, junk, junk, junk, as I am finding coins that are truly nothing. |

For sure sounds like your mostly all from small town areas where coins have a habit of recirculating or just sitting around. I live in the Chicago area and there is such a nutty coin collecting craze going on around here that I'm lucky to find anything older that a few years. I used to go to the banks around here years ago and get a $50 bag of cents and find so much to save I ended up with hundreds of rolls of old Lincolns. Lately when I get such a bag I don't even find anything prior to 82. Around here there are coin shows every weekend. Some are 1 day, some 2 days and some are even 4 day episodes. Some are only 20 or so dealers and some are in the hundreds. I've found that if I even look at my change at a store someone will ask if I'm looking for a rare coin. Around here I haven't seen old coins of any kind in change for a long, long time. A freind of mine occationally brings me a mountain of change from a bar he works at. Any old ones usually are dirty, bent, smell, coated with some gook so are probably a health hazard before they are worth collecting. If your still finding old coins in change, consider yourself lucky. Actually if you don't live around here you are lucky.
