Hi everyone. After being turned away for a $25 box at two different Chase branches, I hit up a nearby WaMu branch. Guy tells me no minimum to open, so I decide to open an account w/ $10. He then gets me the $25 box I requested, it turns out to be an NF String & sons box. I grab the box and head home in the rain. Once I got home, I open it only to find to my dismay it consists ENTIRELY of brand new 2008 zinc pennies. Not only that, but there were two rolls missing!! That's right, there were only 48 rolls in the sealed box. Of course, since I already opened it, I couldn't return it to the WaMu branch. I was VERY unhappy as you can imagine, having just paid $25 for $24 worth of pennies. I took the box to my dump bank, and promptly got a Brinks box from my bank and a NF String box (this one good to go) from a nearby Chase branch. I just finished the Brinks box, and will have final numbers shortly. It did yield 9 wheats (including a '54d in GREAT condition), several Canadians, and one Bahama penny. Has anyone else ever been skunked and shorted in the same box?

Never shorted rolls but had a roll this week with only 43 cents in it. 2 rolls after that I had roll with 3 dimes though, it all works out in the end.

If you take a look on ebay you will see the going price for sealed boxes of 2008 pennies going for about double price. That info is for those who have banks with new sealed boxes in their vaults and you can get your hands on them to flip for a quick buck. My banks unfortunately have no new ones. Good luck. Oh yea, sorry for the shorted rolls on the sealed box, bummer man.

I'm getting $42-$45 all day long on ebay for those. After fees and all, I'm clearing $12-$16 bucks per box (roughly 1.6x face for zincers average) Last one sold $34.95 in 1 hour flat for BIN. If I can get any more (and I'm trying) I will bump the BIN to $49.95.

Why would sealed boxes of 2008 be selling for double the price?

Probably the same reason why copper pennies were going for nice premiums not that long ago. Supply and demand and convenience all added together. I scratch my head why brand new zincs command a premium and can only hazard a guess that it is because the buyers can not find them easily where they are. It is not like zinc pennies are not being made still. Perhaps the mint-marks make a difference too. It is safe to say that the rolls are basically BU quality for all intents and purposes. The buyers may be squirreling them away for future collector value. |
