For the last 4 or 5 boxes of nickels,I haven't found not one war nickel of any buffaloes either. So..... I took a little drive out of town and went to several really small towns. I stocked up on halves and bought one box of nickels from a small town nearby. I want to see if it will make any difference. Has anyone else noticed the war nickels and buffaloes becoming much more scarce?

I still think there are plenty out there, but it will be like oil recovery. You'll need to drill baby, drill.

I do lots of nickels - mind you most have beavers on them, but the US jeffs mixed in add up to boxes over time. I've only ever bagged one ageless buffalo, and maybe 5 war nicks. Almost all the really old Canadian nickels I found were in my early sorting days (like back in Feb 88) too. I think it is just luck - and cleaning out the coins from the back of the vaults. Once I found 33 of the "200 years of nickel discovery" coins in one roll. Yet I think other then that roll I've never seen any in the wild.

As people dump old coin jars, the old coins get reintroduced, so they are always entering the market for you too find. For example - one of my coolest finds yet was just this week - a 1942 Newfoundland Penny. Hard to believe that was circulating still, a penny without a country really. Anyone seeing it would pocket it. So it must have been rolled and deposited somehow recently. I found it in the big bucket of copper, so have no idea where it came from, or what kind of roll.

again , sorry for the double entry.

there was an ebay add for canadian pennies, got me to looking at when they changed over.. so i went through my jar . oldest i found was 1950. three 'georges', a dozens 'moderns' . the no dates threw me for a few minutes of research.

the same person had 'war nickels.'' 40's...... was all that was specified. called him on it. so he cancelled the auction until he could go through them.

yet another got defensive, said....... they are old... duhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

I deleted your double post for you.

Canadian Pennies to 1996 are 98% Copper
Canadian Nickels to 1981 are Pure Nickel
No Date coins - try turning them over

I suspect the lack of those types of coins poping up lately is they don't make them anymore
