I am reading about how you can be skunked often or have some decent or obscenely high yield silver finds in the $500 half-dollar boxes. So, what are the averages for most folks here? I am thinking of doing the weekly bank order for Kennedy halves.

Order and sort as many 50 cent pieces as you are able! Go with $5K a week if you can. My averages seem to be somewhere between 0% to 90% silver recovered (with a 99.9% degree of accuracy on that precise statistic). It all depends on when/where you take the points of measurement. You got to love statistics, they'll say anything you want (within a specific degree of accuracy)! I like to think the glass is half full and make it a habit to ask for "glasses" of halves whenever and wherever I can. The more you look at the more Ag you get to see. |

| I would guesstimate my average is about 2-3 40% and 0.33 90% per box overall. It's not unusual to get 3 skunks in a row. I should also note that I believe my percentages have been declining in the last 3 months or so. |

I'm thinking 0-4 "keepers" per box. For every obscenely high yield you hear about, there are dozens or hundreds of skunks.

With boxes I've only averaged maybe 2 or 3 keepers per box. The great majority of the keepers are 40%.
Haven't done any boxes in over 4 months. |

It is a roller coaster thrill ride for sure. Up and down, up and down. Every silver adds up over time and before you know it you have a nice stash. Some areas are better than others so our stats don't mean jack to you. Only thing you can do is to try it and see what you accumulate in a set time, then decide if you want to continue. I am so thankful that I started this 15 months ago- let ME explain. Before I started I lived paycheck to paycheck, spending everything I made. When I started searching halves, I ordered 2 boxes to coincide with payday, in essence I searched my paycheck before I paid bills with it. I became very frugal (tight) with my money as I needed it to hunt with. Every payday I was able to up my orders until finally I could buy more boxes than I could search and dump. To cut to the chase, with the economy the way it is and I am in construction I have not been able to give myself a paycheck for the last 2 months and have had to cut my orders down. But I am still able to hunt and survive because of that change in my spending habits- and I've got alot of silver too but even without that I am way better off now than I would have been (don't even want to think about that). Get in now cause with the banks getting tighter on customer service items all will soon be wanting to charge FEES. Good luck to ya, Mark |

Hi there,
I sort halves and dimes.
Halves are DEFINITELY feast or famine for me, I've gotten over 20 40% and 90% in single boxes, and I've also gone $5000 with NOTHING. Just keep at it. Dimes are more stable for me. I almost always find 2-3 per box, no matter where I get them from. But, I never find MORE than 2-3 per box.

Hi there,
Me again-
I would suggest not getting TOO carried away with sorting at first. getting the $500 in halves is the easy part- converting the halves BACK to FRNs is a bit more challenging. Lugging the coins, waiting to cash them in, Oh, machine jammed, there's a 15-minute delay right there, and so on, and so on....
I do my fair share, but I simply cannot see people doing thousands of dollars a week in coins. It's a GREAT little moneymaker on the side, you can do a box in about half an hour while watching TV with a beer, and if you can afford the time, money, and effort to do it regularly, it's usually good for an extra $50-$75 bucks a month, depending on what you sort. But, it's NOT an early retirement. Never take it for granted that you'll find silver.

Mark - that is just awesome! This little hobby makes one think about money and save money which is a huge bonus. I and many others here now have hundreds in Cu, Ni and Ag stashed away now, money that's not in the market to be lost, and has not been spent in a store. Even if the metal play doesn't pan out (seems unlikely but could happen) we have these cash reserves that few people have now.
Hope your work situation turns around soon. If you need to cash out on some of those found halves, PM because I buy halves and will give you a fair price. |

it was not until the last roll that i got one 1967.
when i was in tucson last winter, i was getting $500 boxes each week. my keepers were in the range of 0-12.
went in one day. they had 5 rolls. got to the truck and of course, could not wait to get home. turned out i got 60 walkers , franks, and .64s . of the rest , 30 were 40%. ONLY 10 WERE NOT SILVER. |

Thanks for the offer but I've got a guy that I sell all my 40%ers to and some 90%ers too if I have a big bill come in- he has been a good grubstaker for ME when the local coin shops wouldn't pay jack. I have toned things down but it takes some of the stress out of it, now on a weekly basis I'm doing 22 boxes- 2 monthes ago I was doing 42 (that was a grunt, having to dump $3K every single day). Here's a story of my best adventure. I went to the bank to dump a couple bags, flirt with the teller... She had always asked where I got all these halves- I told her I cleaned out wishing wells. Anyways on this particular day she has something to show ME. She had an envelope with 20 Bens in it. Very nice says I. She says she's gonna see what the coin shop will give her for them. I said "you do that but, if he won't give you $5 apiece don't sell them to him cause I'll buy them". Went back Monday and handed her $100, she says "whats this for?" Them Bens- I said I would pay $5 apiece. She thought that was too much and gave ME $10 back- IK with ME. We got to talking and she says she could have got more but didn't know if they was worth anything- she rescued them from the coin counter, some lady brought in a bunch of halves. Really says I, is that first bag I topped off still here, yes. Can I buy that bag, sure. She put the plastic bag on the counter and you could see silver all over in it- I still swear I saw the back of a Barber but didn't find one. Very good night that night, like 70 90%ers and 150 40%ers. But the story doesn't end there. I shared my story on GIM and got a PM from a fellow who asked if I would be interested in trading melt for melt for (2) $5 gold pieces. I think it worked out to 75 '64 Kenedy's so in a sense I got almost 1/2 oz gold for $37.50. Thought you all would enjoy that. HH Mark |

| So that is the secret. Do 3k a day in halves and you can strike the silver lode. I've only found a handful by buying up bank stock on hand. I can only do this while I'm visiting the US. |
