I went to the bank on friday and bought a box of nickels. While I was there I asked if they had any half dollars. The girl said she had a couple of "loose" halves. Then the girl next to her said there were some in the vault. Around here, they mostly are found in $10 rolls. She said they had 9 rolls in the vault. I told her I would like 9. She said..9 halves? I said, no, 9 rolls($90). I had recently bought 3 rolls ($30) and one of the 60 halves was a 1968 kennedy which is 40% silver. Anyways, I got home with my nickels and halves and began unrolling some of the halves. I wasn't unrolling the halves in a hurry and I was mostly sorting nickels. I got to the 8th roll of halves today a little while ago and the entire roll (20) was ALL 1964 Kennedy halves! Thats 90% silver! They are all in great condition! Thanks goes to HCBTT. It was he who suggested that halves are worth pursuing.

Great story Dan! If I can't get the Silver Santa to visit me at least I can vicariously enjoy your good fortune. I sorted 130 rolls of dimes today.. and got skunked.. well I did get 1 non-silver Canadian, and 1 mexico 10c.. is that worse than getting skunked? Am I going to let this discourage me?.. Heck no! I already rerolled them all (by machine of course) and I will turn them in at one of my banks tomorrow.. then go pick up a box of halves that is waiting for me at another of my banks. I'll sort through those and go drop off any that aren't silver at another of my banks. It's all part of the adventure. |

| HCBTT, My last three boxes of dimes have been skunks. I think its time for me to back off the dimes. Its just that time I got the two mercuries and the other 3 silvers keeps me wanting more. In my post about the 20---1964 halves, I said they were uncirculated. I have examined them further and I found that they have different mint marks...14 have no mark and 6 are d mint marks. For that reason I think maybe they were circulated.....a little. The first time I bought some halves, I bought 3 rolls and you know how the first thing you notice when you got silver is that one color edge, not the copper nickel thing. Well I spotted the 1968 in one of those rolls. What I am trying to say is that I am trained to see that one silver edge in between many "regular" edges. So when I opened that 8th roll of the 9 I bought yesterday, I almost fell out. When I bought those 9 rolls, I spaced them out to interrupt the monotony of continuous nickel sorting. Thats why I bought them on a friday but didn't hit the 8th roll til saturday. The opening of the 9th and last roll was immediate following the discovery in the 8th roll. lol. Vicariously you said. I thought it was you who bought a $500 bag of halves and they were all silver? Perhaps you were relating a story you had heard? I offer thanks and ask for patience from those who correctly place my mis-placed posts. |

| Very sweet find! When silver goes up this find will just get better and better and better. I'd say a whole roll of 90%ers is worth a seperate thread, but you might as well brag in the 1/2s thread too - maybe include the link to this thread in your post there because this thread will fall down the stack over time. |

Dan, I never hit it that big. It has been about almost a year since the Silver Santa last visited me. I got 99 silver halves out of 6 rolls that I picked up at one of my banks on impulse 5 minutes before closing. 88 90%ers and 11 40%ers! Of course back in those days they were worth more.. LOL.
Be sure to always date check your halves.. sometimes folks can get fooled by those 40%ers.. and you might find an impaired Proof or an 87.
Be sure to check your 64-d halves carefully.. I think there is a double die or OMM variety for that date. |

HCBTT,legacy, others, when y'all sort dimes, are you on the watchout for that P-less 1982? Apparently, there were some dimes that were supposed to get minted with a P but didn't. I've heard values being anything from $100 to $3000.
