An acquaintance of mine commented to me today that his and his wife's 401(k)s have lost about $10,000 just in the past week. I told him that he really needed to consider buying gold and/or silver as a hedge against inflation and stock market uncertainties. He said, "Do you really think I'm going to go out and buy $10,000 worth of gold and silver??" In the back of my mind I'm thinking, "Well, you would if you were smart..." but I kept my mouth shut. What should I say next time I talk to this guy or someone else who has the same mindset?

I would not be offended by that statement! I would be offended if someone said "Anyone with half a brain would" -
But my best answer is..... "It's what I'm doing with my money" |

You can't tell people what to do, thats what the Government is there for...
Seriously, people usually can't be told what to do, they have to find it out own their own.
All you can do is try to persuade them to look for themselves.
Try to give them some info. and web sites to look at.
If that don't work, then chalk it up to more PMs for you at a better price.

| You are a good egg Nickelless for trying to help, but you better consider if you will want so many people to know that you are holding PMs in the near future. |

I'm not telling them that I'm buying any PMs, just that they might seriously want to consider it. But I will certainly try to watch what I say.
If the worse happens, blame them for talking you out of buying. |

You could always say something about the need to diversify, then casually throw PMs into a list of alternative investments.
But the thing I've learned about advice is this: The wise don't need it and fools won't heed it. |

The best advice I've gotten in my life came from the least gifted of my four brothers, the first was the above,
The other was, "You can't polish a turd".
I'm with Ardent. Be very careful who you discuss your PM holdings with, or you're likely to become like the lottery winner who has every person he's ever met show up at his door reminding him what good friends they were back in the day...
Nickelless, the best you can do is plant the seed in peoples heads, and position yourself as best you can to take care of those close to you, who currently have their heads in the sand, to make sure they have the basics of what they truly need when it counts.

This is what went through my mind as I was reading the posts in order. "Loose lips sink ships" is a phrase that applies here. |

| If you ever think too much damage was done (you told too many people or the wrong people) just tell them you sold out because you needed cash, or you sold when the silver price went down to cut your losses. Make it seem like you have little or none to help ease the target on your back. |

I pretty much dress like a bum anyway, so maybe nobody will suspect anything. Being primarily self-employed, I hardly ever wear anything besides T-shirt and jeans and my car is a clunker, so people might think I'm just full of it if I'm talking about PM. But yeah, you have a very good point that I will try to work on. Keeping my big mouth shut isn't something I do very well. |

| Lol I know what you mean. I used to talk silver and gold up at work and wish I hadn't. I quit and am self-employed now myself, but still keep in contact with some of the guys. As far as they know, I sold most of the stash to finance going into biz for myself. :) |

| I sold everything to cut my losses when silver and copper dropped last month. Every last ounce and copper penny. I might have a few zincs under the couch, but don't come looking for PM at my house. That's my story and I'm sticking too it. |

You wouldn't tell them anything.. if you're smart.
It is a no win situation. If they take your advise, you have competition for the commodities. If for some reason they lose money in that investment.. it will be all your fault. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

To an ignorant person, $10,000 seems like a lot of gold. They might even think they'd need a giant safe to store it. The truth is that it's just a few coins that will easily fit in their pockets.
That could be one way to further the conversation, if you wish to. "It's not that much, really. Why, you could fit that much in your..."

I could point out that $10,000 in $100 bills takes up the same amount of space as $100 in $1 bills. |

| If you had convinced them to buy yesterday, you would be much more busy convincing them not to sell tomorrow after todays price drop. I'm betting that a lot are thinking they are glad they didn't listen to you and are convinced PMs are not the answer. When they find out that they are.... it will be too late. With the $hit Hitting the Fan the best way to keep PMs out of the hands of the general public is to scare them away from them while those in power still can. |

Hi there-
He won't buy PM's? Good! More for me! : D
Don't worry, the same fella who disowned the PMs will be standing in the bank run line at 3am. You can drive by with your truck full of gold and wave.

My mother came to me in January and told me she had $30,000 she wanted to place somewhere safe. "And don't tell me silver or gold. Where could I keep it safe?"
I told her you have all ready ruled out the two best options, maybe a bit of land, I told her.
I have showed my wife, and then convinced her not to put me in a rubber room. These past few weeks though she was happy I did not trust the stock market.
I have a bank deposit box, and it keeps quite well. I don't keep my cents there though.
