I have always wanted to own some Roman coins, not becuase I think they are going up but just to own something that old and historic. I want to get some soon, because they too likely will go up if silver goes up.
what is the best way to go about getting some - coins shows, ebay, websites, ? coin shows for me always seem to have higher prices.

| I don't know if the Roman coins really move with silver. I would stick to a reputable bricks and morter dealer since these coins are commonly faked. I saw some nice Roman coins in a Vancouver physical store - You must be logged in to see this link. They have a large US clientel and are a major dealer for the RCM. Don't think they list the Roman stuff on the web so just call them. You could order some nice new maples while you are at it. I'm no coin expert so do your own due dilagence on price. All I can tell you is J&M is very real, has lots of inventory in thier store, and a long history in Vancouver. |

I bought this kit a few years ago. The coins in the kit were all copper but were interesting and relatively cheap for ancient coins You must be logged in to see this link.

The ancient coins forum should give you an idea of what is out there, silver wise, and fakes to watch out for. They also have ancient coins for sale so consider this site another source of Roman Coins.
If you just want a few silver (or gold) Roman coins try to get them authenticated to verify their authenticity. |

| I always wanted some too but fakes seem too be easy to fool someone like myself. All one would need to do is do a bad job in minting them and they would seem real. |

I have ordered modern world coins from each of the three sellers below and been pleased with the service and quality of the coins. I haven't ordered any ancient coins, however -- not for lack of trust, it just isn't one of my areas of interest. Well, I'm interested, but I can't buy everything.

| ancient coins are very cool to hold in your hand abut are minimal in value. However silver ancient coins have a rather higher numismatic value, and gold even more. Copper, brass, and bronze are the most popular and cheap they are. I used to get them at $60.00 per 100 or so. (uncleaned). I used to clean them, all the years of copper corrosion are very harmful to the lungs. I no longer do it, but these are not faked usually, since the Roman empire produced nearly as many cents as we annualy produce. Rome conqured so much area, over so much land, mints changed so often and governors changed so often that there is zillions of varieties and most are undocumented. But they are cheap, and if you want to say by some I am nearly positive I can still get them. But by now I am sure the price is doubled, and for cleaned you can usually expect to pay about $20.00 each, they are fun to have one or two, but I wouldn't buy any for investment. Try eBay. |

| if there's anything in particular you want let me know, in england we have a large supply of roman coins, obviously due to the fact that Romans conquered Britain and were here for a few hundred years. I'm sure I could source some at a good price if you were interested |

Wow, these have been some great responses.
In the U.S. I have only seen pictures of roman coins. I would like to get some that have depictions of historical significane - Julius Ceaser, Constantine, The Colliseum, etc. I guess I just have to shop.
Frugi - where did you get the coins 100 for $60.00? I would love to have that deal. |

It is at an ancient relic coin & jewelry store in Illinois, very near Saint Louis, Mo. in a town called Fairview Heights. If he is still around he would have them. But they would definitely be more expensive than $60/100 coins. I would tell you his website if I knew it and I don't know where is card is right now, but I will find it & let you know. I will get you the best deal I can. The only thing is my last dealings with him was probably 8 years ago, so I am sure his prices have changed, and by knowing him I would guess his means of acquiring them has changed since 9/11, customs are stricter on items coming into the US. |

Try the PCGS web site. They have an ancient forum section and with well over 20,000 members you should really get some great answers. In the downtown area of Chicago there is a really large coin and antique shop that has many of those but thier prices are excessive. |
