is it hollow? (as in can you see through it?) if not it may be filled with poop and is gross, sorry. either way, I would keep it for the future as lead will soon be unavailable to the general public. So many enviromental groups are against lead it will soon be gone. Lead is high right now and should be worth about $0.50/lb. to your local scrapper, I would keep it though. |

As Frugi said.... keep it for now, just not under you pillow or in your soup pot.
$5 wouldn't be worth you gas to the scrap yard anyway.
I don't know about alloys and contaminants and such, but I'm told that gun owners use these sometimes to melt down and make their own shot/bullets. Much cheaper than buying a box from the gun store. |

In that case should I be stock piling my car batteries? I don't collect many. I was quoted $5 a piece and thought that it was a fair price though.

Lead is VERY easy to melt and VERY toxic. Don't get down wind and take a lung full!!! Ware a respirator if you even think you're going to be nervous. That being said, folks have been melting lead and surviving for centuries, probably millennia. I usually melt lead over a wood fire in an old cast iron dutch oven (stir with a piece of rebar), skim the dross with a ladle or soup can wired onto another piece or rebar and "cast" it by pouring into small 6" cast iron pans, or cast iron muffin tins. I trade it to a couple re-loaders I know for 25% to 30% of the 30-06 shells they make with the resulting product(depends on how much they pay for primers and powder) I trade for 50% of what they re-load if I give them my old brass. I think this works out to everyone's advantage. Battery plates are my main source of lead, I don't seem to run into as many lead pipes as I used to. Re-loaders don't like tire weights, they say it has to much antimony and makes it hard to clean the barrel of a gun.
I've heard the "Tin Solder" crowd will happily take recast tire weights.

| Hey guys don't forget fisherman! Lead sinkers are still very common, not sure if they are made out of anything else yet. I keep all my lead and melt it for sinkers was thinking about trying to cast some balls for my .50 cal flintlock. As stated above becareful with lead when melting very nasty to breathe i wear a full respirator and also melt outside with a fan or wind blowing opposite direction from me. |
And or course there are those, equally eminent, who believe the market is on the eve of the “biggest and strongest economic boom in history.” There is only one thing to worry about in those words. They have been used before. On the eve of the day when the bubble burst. (Max Morgan Witts and Gorden Thomas) |

The scrapyard I go to pays $.04/lb. I've sold them a few hundred pounds of batteries. Didnt get much, but was glad to get rid of them. |

| I believe lead is illegal for both reloads and sinkers in a lot if states. Not saying it should be, just a heads up. |

Warning- Don't breath lead fumes! Baking soda takes care of the battery acid, dump acid out of battery add baking soda it until it stops fizzing, water the flowers with the result, lots of minerals that make flowers bloom. Wash out battery with water and more baking soda if you like. Smack plastic with hammer until scuzzy plates look at you. Make a wood fire in your fire pit or rock lined hole in the ground, toss in some coal if you have any. Put a dutch oven on the fire, put lead in the dutch oven, keep adding fuel until things melt. Stir with rebar, remove funky stuff on top, pour into a cast iron muffin tin. Slam muffin tin upside down on a hard surface after it cools. You got lead ingots. Warning - Don't breath lead fumes!

Well I cant speak for Computer Jones, but I personally could not tell someone how to do something without mentioning the fact that certain steps could cause serious injury. I'm sure that sometime in the past you have walked into a room someone was painting and the fumes almost put you on your a**, yet they are over in la la land painting away.
Sometimes dangerous things are not very apparent despite any amount of common sense.
With that said I will always warn anyone of any known dangers when I am giving them advice on step by step procedures. |

Well yes and no and thanks so much for asking ... Lead is deadly in more ways than one! I take precautions, but I'm not so sure they're massive. I'd really prefer to live a healthy and productive life, as well as, retain my brain in a functional state until 2 days before I expire. (One day of total crazy would probably be enough for me.) There are simple safety precautions that should be taken into consideration when melting things, or even frying a turkey. Your local library is a good place for basic fact gathering. Lead is an element from Ancient times and has always and a use, hence value. Lead makes your top hat stand better. Lead comes in very handy to counteract buoyancy when SCUBA diving. Lead can "pack" a bearing and get you home, or away from home. Lead can hold fish bait on the bottom of a river, stream or bay. Lead can make bullets, OH Scary!!! Lead is a major component of making your very own simple battery. Lead can make fired pottery much more attractive. Lead makes paint prettier and adhere better. If TSHTF lead will be in demand. *!Stay upwind, melt and cast outdoors!* |

A propane torch and a ladle works good. A Coleman stove won't get it.

I have made my own mini lead bars out of scrap lead using a propane fueled Coleman stove, no problem.

if anybody wants free lead just get a underwater metal detector and start using it at the nearest beach....the guys in my detecting club always bring home lots of sinkers when they go water detecting. I am going to give it a try myself this summer.
I found a 15lb lead brick in a yard earlier this year, I'm using it to hold down a tarp over my firewood pile. |

Sulfuric acid is the electrolyte in car batteries. Not necessarily saying that I recommend it, but it can be neutralized with baking soda. |

H2SO4 and baking soda make good fertilizer. Do your research and don't be afraid. Remember one of the strongest acids is in your very own stomach to help you digest your food. READ up on what you want to do and you'll have no problem. *!WARNING - Do not inhale Lead fumes if you want to cast your own Lead items!!!!***
