I took a microwave oven transformer out today and cut into the wires. The thick wires on the bottom winding and very thin on top winding both appear to be copper on the outside, but are a silver color on the inside. What type of metal do you think these are?
Thanks for the help!

I was afraid of that. I thought the mystical MOT was going to be a copper treasure trove.
Do you know if magnetrons sell for anything? |

| Not all of them are aluminum. I've found many that are copper wound. |
Are you throwing that out? |

| I disposed of my old microwave about half a year ago. I didnt think there was really any value in it. Does anyone know what approximately a busted microwave is worth in scrap value? |

I've taken apart several microwaves. I don't have a truck so they are about the largest appliances I can transport.
When scrap prices were high, I estimated $6-8 scrap value per microwave. I guess it would be ~50% or less of that now. I was also assuming that the transformers were copper; I didn't know they could be aluminum. I did not have to unwind or cut apart the transformers, the scrap place called them 'dirty copper' or something like that and paid $0.20 a pound. The shell is steel, there is a mess of copper wire, several microswitches, and a motor for the turntable. The magnetron assembly has aluminum cooling fins. The number pad has silver traces, but probably a negligible amount. I have not tried to refine any yet.
I tried selling the transformers and capacitors on craigslist with no buyers. The capacitors sell on eBay, but the transformers are usually too expensive to ship. I've even seen the turntable plates sell on eBay for $10-25, but have not tried selling any.

| Thanks for replying. The bad news is I had to get rid of the microwave because it was taking up space. The good news is that I saved the turntable plate. Oh well good to know. |
