I bought £15 worth of 1 and 2 pence coins today as I've just started sorting for copper pre 1992 in UK.
From the £15 I found £4.35 in copper coins. I also found a few of the new design 1 and 2ps which haven't been rolled out much yet which look nice, and an isle of man 1p |

Not a dumb question at all.
There are several reasons that are magic about that number as my standard order quantity at each bank.
1. It is lightweight.. fitting easily on my cart.. about 350 pounds. 2. Fits easily in the trunk of my Toyota Camry without overloading it. 3. Cheap.. so you don't tie up a lot of capital at once. 4. Seems to be a comfortable quantity for many of the banks I deal with. |

Got bad news today. My main dump bank cut me off. No more dumping loose bags at that branch or regular 24 box special orders. Seems they have a new manager this week.. and he doesn't want to give away anything to regular customers that they put business accounts on analysis for.
I didn't even get that dreaded "The manager needs to talk to you" talk. They sent some flunkie to tell me they were cutting me off. Like the great Rodney.. "I don't get no respect!"
This is why you always develop new sources of pennies and places to dump them. That way, when this happens to you it doesn't take you out of the game. |

Hoard be sure to give them your card and tell them to call you when the inevidably run short on pennies. I bet they have not ordered in pennies for so long they forgot how. Without regular supply and no backup plan, who knows?
You might just spread the word about the exact branch to your other coin guys to make some penny dumps there instead.
Consider having your mother, girlfriend or someone else open an account there you can dump into. It will take them a little while to drive out another customer or catch on. |

Started of a trip to the City by visiting two Banks while waiting for wife's appointment to finish.
Bought: $500 Qtrs (all steel, sorted by CDI for the mint :( blahhh $100 Pennies $300 Nickels and $100 in Dimes (got a single 80% silver! and a few American)
Sold: $200 Pennies $100 Qtrs (from above)
Not Bought: 1. The story from the first teller that Canada is eliminating the penny because copper costs too much (pennies are made from nearly all steel now)
2. Sex from the truly UGLY woman on the corner who grabbed my door handle and tried to get in my Jeep before 10AM in broad daylight, a block from the first bank
3. Anything from the other equally ugly friend of hers talking to some old guy on the corner.
Perhaps the overly friendly local resident wanted the $300 in rolled zinc and steel pennies in the back? Or maybe the stack of hundreds in my pocket? I didn't have so much as a single copper or ni coin on me yet...
Once in the City visited three more banks:
Bought: $130 Pennies $180 Nickels $250 Dimes $1030 Qtrs
Sold: $41 Pennies $25 Dimes $670 Qtrs
When one of my favorate dump banks asked me where I got all the quarters I said I collect them, but these have all been sorted by the Mint. Teller tells me a guy comes and buys all the nickels they can sell, and that the guy sells the nickels on ebay. Wonder how that program is working for him since I started dumping boxes and boxes of sorted steel nickels on that branch in the last few weeks? |

7.50 in paper rolls (CWR) (i.e. 750 pennies total)
318 Cu (59-81) 3 wheats 25 1982s (need to screen these with Penny Whorder's low cost sorter...haven't had time to play with it yet ;) 4 Canadian Cu cents 1 Euro 2 cent piece (that's a first for me)
I'll let you all work out the various percentages but if you count only the US 59-81 cents it's 42.4%. Wonder if that will hold up (I usually see 25-30% US 59-81 cents)?
Going to a different bank chain for pickups to test it out...bigger regional bank but its locations are in really low traffic areas with a lot of older people as customers...felt sorry for the nice lady in the lobby who was offering free snacks and trying to sign people up for that bank's retirement accounts / investments...in the long run my copper pennies may just do better (and wow are 401(k)s etc getting whacked right now so I felt sorrier for the lady who had to sell them to zero lobby customers)
On a related note I see drive-thru traffic is really far far bigger than people parking and either using an ATM or going inside to transact business. |

15.00 in paper rolls (CWR) (i.e. 1500 pennies total)
684 Cu (59-81) 21 (!) wheats 86 1982s (need to screen these) 2 dirty dimes (Roosevelts not silver) 3 Canadian Cu cents 1 Panamanian coin (that's a first for me)
I'll let you all work out the various percentages but if you count only the US 59-81 cents it's 45.6%.
The wheats all came in one really ancient roll (latest pennies in it dated to the mid 1960s) I bought from a bank I've never tried before (and am going back to tomorrow to see if there are any more rolls like it). It was 15 minutes to closing when I bought them (inside).
Hit the drive thru teller at the same bank 2 minutes after the lobby closed with some $$$ found at the last minute...rolls were newer vintage paper but they too were interesting...whoever rolled them rolled the shiniest coins together (yielding mostly zincs) and then rolled the duller coins together in other rolls (yielding mostly coppers and those 2 dirty dimes). I'm guessing someone did the easy to tell they were pennies first and then did the harder ones later (I sometimes roll them that way when I'm tired...roll shiny easy to tell zincs together first then take a break then do the harder to date zincs second). |

7.00 in paper rolls (CWR) (i.e. 700 pennies total)
366 Cu (59-81) 6 wheats 75 1982s (need to screen these) 3 Canadian Cu cents
I'll let you all work out the various percentages but if you count only the US 59-81 cents it's 52.3%.
I plan on taking the 250 zincs I pulled from this sort, trading them in and buying again at this same bank (need to add some cash and buy some more)...percentages from them are really good although some of the 59-81 non-wheat coppers are kind of dirtier than I usually see. |

I have been playing with nickels and halves since the drop in copper. I did get some cents to sort today, though.
9900 cents sorted (CWR) 1639 copper 16.56%
In two weeks after I free some funds from halves I will be pulling a HCBTT and getting 24 boxes. The head teller big not bulk at the request suprisingly (the oher tellers did and started saying he 'F' word). |

Heh...I would not want to be a teller at a dump bank without a counting machine when Epaphras or Hoard brings in their culls! |

First box. $25.00.
no joke, 666 coppers, including wheats (13) and canadians (5) - but not including 1982s (I just put all of those to the side).
so for my first box, my percentage is 26.64%. Plus it helped to fill up some old whitman books while I was at it (those copper S mints are still problematic though - found 2 S mints in the entire 2500). I may go to the store and buy a few more and give them to my young relations as presents this Christmas. |

Those are the days when it is really nice to have multiple Ryedales Andy. I pretty much never get them loose like that, but I did get a nice call from one of my banks yesterday about picking up some pennies. They had $147 in CWR for me.. and 9 rolls of half dollars. I figure any day you lug about 100 pounds of coins out of a bank is a good day. |

Yesterday was not a bad coin day. In addition to getting 30 rolls of CWR at one of my banks after paying nearly my entire mortgage with spare change (half dollars and pennies) I bought 40 Proof Sac dollars at a coin show.. really shiny! |
