We are privilaged to have a great Private Message (PM) System. It evidently gets used quite a bit. If I read the little table below right, there are nearly 300 undeleted PM's in the last 15 days! That is a lot of PM activity.
I suspect that the mass deletions of inactive accounts has also deleted a lot of very old PM's, but as you can see there are still many old PM's sitting around. In fact over 1/2 of the PM's on the system are older then 60 days, and about 60% of the unread ones are older then 60 days (which makes one wonder if they will ever be read). It might speed the PM system up and increase it's reliability if we deleted old PM's.
Current Private Message Counts Time Period .......Read Unread All ...............1940..97 Older than 15 days 1659..73 Older than 30 days 1420..68 Older than 45 days 1218..64 Older than 60 days 1049..61
I will do some testing with several of you to determine exactly how PM's get deleted (if one member deletes it, does that delete the other side of the PM or not, for example).
In the meantime, please review and clean up your older PM's.
Unless someone has a valid objection or other evidence - All PM's over 60 days will be deleted sometime after the end of next week or maybe a little later. This will give time for active members to save any info they want to save. It will be interesting to see if the number of old PM's drops significantly because active members have deleted thier own old PM's. If you clean up your PM's post a note here so I can gadge the voluntary deletions vs total old PM's. Thanks. legacypac

Any particular reason you want to get rid of old PM's? There is already an inbox limit in place so nobody can stack up more than their fair share. Shouldn't make any difference in speed...those numbers are child's play for any half-decently-coded forum program |

I keep some of my old ones to help keep my affairs in order. I would rather them not be deleted, but do what you have to do.

This is why I brought it up for discussion. The limit is 40 but that seems to be changable on a forum wide basis. I don't really care if we keep PM's forever- unless they are causing some problems (slow downs for example) for us. The point of the forum is to to facilite discussion. It belongs to all of us, so how can we make it work best? |

I'd say leave it as-is. I have quite a few older messages saved that I reference. I've already cleaned out my inbox several times...at least 50 messages over the past two months. The Copper Cave had quite a few inquires in the beginning |

Should we raise the limit to 50 messages? |

Raise or not I don't care. I just would like to keep the ones I have. But as I said before, I'm a team player and I'll go along with whatever. Just give me warning.

Given the helpful input - and the fact that there seems to be no ill effects buy having old PM's around, I have decided to leave them all alone. We collect old coins after all, so why not old PM's. Post on people. |
