The Conservative Govt of Stephen Harper has called Canadians to the polls on October 14. As a Parlamentry democracy, Canadians will vote to elect 308 Members of Parlament each representing a defined geographic area called a riding. Most prospective MPs run under the banner of a Party. The Party with the most seats is invited to form the government, and the Party Leader (elected in a riding like all other MPs) becomes the Prime Minister.
At desolution, the following parties were represented in Parlament(by relative MP count): Conservitive (minority government) Liberal, Bloc, New Democratic Party/NDP, several independants and several vacant seats, and one Green Party MP (defected from Liberals).
While no one as exciting as Palin or Obama is running, we do have some very Canadian interesting news. As you will never see these stories in the US News, I will try to share some of the more interesting ones here.
Green Leader Elizabeth May appologized today she has never smoked pot. She stated "I am not a fan of marijuana use. I have never used marijuana. I apologize". She was unvailing the Green Party plan to legalize pot and collect $1 billion in pot taxes. This woman will be in the TV Leaders debates - should make them more interesting.

So, everyone up there smokes? Is that what you are saying? One billion dollars from a pot tax is a lot of tax payers paying that tax.... Just say yes, eh?
Deal
p.s. I have no problem what people do, as long as nobody else gets hurt. |

The NDP candidate in the B.C. riding of Saanich-Gulf Islands says he made a "serious error in judgment" by taking off his clothes in front of minors twelve years ago. Julian West released a statement Sunday about the 1996 incident, where he removed his clothes several times in front of teens at an environmental retreat. West, 43, says other than removing his clothes to go skinny-dipping, nothing inappropriate happened on the retreat. According to a 1996 report, the incident was investigated by Lake Cowichan RCMP and later dropped. No charges were laid. The report quotes an RCMP officer who said a complaint was filed after West dropped his shorts while a group of teens were bodypainting, and said, "Paint me all over."
CTV was far more graphic - it reported an email they received today from a girl that was there. The email alleged that there were a number of teenage girls there, he was "partially erect" and that while the girls were painting his legs West said "why stop there girls" (I'm quoting the words used on TV here!)
In June, 1996, the Province newspaper reported that West skinny dipped, but also that he “got too excited during naked body painting” at a Conference for Earth at Mesachie Lake near Duncan. The story quoted Cowichan Secondary School principal Tom Miller saying several of the dozen young witnesses requested counselling and there were “fits of crying.” A parent said one child “nearly vomited.”
NDP Leader Jack Layton is standing by West (or maybe behind West to stay away from his nakedness) who used to be a member of the Green Party. "We welcome people who have advanced ideas on issues relevant to the environment," Layton said Sunday.
Indeed, so now we call trying to seduce teenage girls "advanced ideas on issues to the environment". Beats the Al Gore approach by far!
But here is the kicker in the same riding! Much better looking Liberal candidate and environmental activist Briony Penn grabbed international headlines for a nude horse ride as Lady Godiva to protest against logging on Saltspring Island in 2001. At least we all know understand what West was thinking - but what is with the naked chick on the horse? |

Dana Larsen, an NDP candidate in West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast-Sea to Sky Country stepped out after it was revealed there are videos on the internet of him driving while stoned and his seed company was selling coca plants (presumably so you can grow your own cocaine!). Headlines screamed that Larsen stepped down because "this election is not about coca plants". Interestingly, Larson co-founded the BC Marajuina Party a few years back, and ran a pot store for years - points on his resume that failed to tip the NDP off that there might be illegal drug use in his closet.
Kirk Tousaw, a civil libertarian lawyer, dropped out in Vancouver-Quadra citing his past work on drug policy reform. I'm sure the youtube video posted of him smoking a joint had nothing to do with his exit... never.

neorhino.ca is a Canadian federal joke political party. Created in Montreal on May 21, 2006 and recognized by Elections Canada as being eligible for registration on August 16, 2007, and an official political party on August 23, 2007. It is the successor to the Rhinoceros Party of Canada.
The party was founded by François "Yo" Gourd, who was involved with the former Rhinoceros Party. He stated he named the new party for the Rhinoceros Party and for Neo, the Matrix character. The party is currently led by Richelle Cloutier.
It promises, like its predecessor, not to keep any of its promises if elected. Among its early platform planks was to "take away soldiers' weapons, replace them with paintball guns, and repaint Havana." The party has also proposed a mandatory national gas barbecue registry and a guaranteed weekly orgasm.

Things are much more interesting north of the border. Skinny dipping politicians, naked chicks on horses, and stoned politicians, sounds like an interesting time....

Naked Photos taken during Mayor's term become issue now that small town conservative seeks national office (sorry no, we are not talking Palin here) Click the link for sample photos.

The Conservative candidate for B.C.'s Skeena-Bulkley Valley insists naked photos taken of her in her office are not an issue for the party. Sharon Smith, the mayor of Houston, B.C., grabbed worldwide attention five years ago when pictures of her wearing nothing more than a smile and her mayor's robes were widely circulated on the Internet. Copies of the pictures were allegedly copied from her computer and circulated around the small mill town. In one full-length photograph, Smith is seen seated naked with the mayor's medallion around her neck.
Speaking from Smithers, B.C., Smith told CTV the Conservative party is aware of the pictures, and they were never an issue in her bid for office. "They've known since I put my name forward for the riding and the federal candidacy," she said. Smith calls the photos "a personal thing" that should have no impact in her future political career. "My community has spoken to me," she said. "They reelected me for a second term as mayor and people say they want me to represent them, so that's what I'm going on."
Appearing at a luncheon with Smith in Smithers, Conservative Gary Lunn says the photos don't matter to the party. "This election is about leadership. Sharon has shown leadership in the riding and on council so we're very proud to have her as our candidate here," he said. After the picture scandal emerged in late 2003 some councillors and local residents called for Smith to quit her job as mayor, but she refused stating the photos were personal and had been stolen from a house party. In a letter to the local paper, Houston Today, Smith said she was hurt and embarrassed, and that her privacy had been violated. "These photos are private property, belonging to my husband and me."

Go watch the video shown here. This is the current leader of the opposition that wants to be Prime Minister. Does he have a plan for the economy? This is just plain sad, yet FUNNY! |
