BK & Micky D's use mostly unmentionable things in the burgers. Quite possibly the cheapest, nastiest meat on the mkt, but to each their own.:-)
Also, it is against federal law to charge tax on US coins, and/or US coins made of gold or silver. Anyone doing so is ripping you off and should be confronted! |

All I bought yesterday was 5 more bags of copper to add to the hoard, 5 early date Walkers, and a little pile of foreign silver coins. |

| I work at an antique gallery (glorified antique mall), and since I started I have been buying all the non weighted sterling items I can, but not jewelry, just functional sterling, such as: flatware (excluding knives), coin silver flatware, sterling- bowls, plates, vases, candelabra's, etc. I have been finding all sorts of deals, all below melt. This is an inflation proof way of purchasing silver since it has a collectible value and can be resold at a much higher amount. The best purchase to date is tied between a 12 place setting (68 pcs.) sterling flatware set in a mahogany case for $40.00 & I found a large heart shaped box made by william comyn of London in 1875 (paid only $5.00), and is in mint condition. The flatware set is over 70 ounces, and the heart box is only several ounces but is worth over $1200.00 retail. My non-weighted silver hoard is at about 75 lbs. at this point. I will be waiting for silver to drop below $10.00/oz. before I start buying any US 90% face. |

What would be the easiest way to find sterling at antique malls without coming right out and asking and setting off a stampede for silver? What items should people look for? My brother lives just a few blocks from a huge antique mall-type of store, so I can trot in there anytime I'm in town. |

The best advice I can give would be to ask your brother to become a dealer there. The fees are very small. Ours are $65.00/month & 10% off all your sales. You will need someone who knows when the dealer paychecks are issued ( on what day ). That will be the day all the dealers come in to get their $$$, and that is usually when all the dealers come in and bring new items, so just show up that day, and only shop the locked glass cases. Also, some places have a dealer sign in sheet near the register, if you stopped by every day, you could check the list and only check the cases that have those dealers signed in under. Bring a pen & paper and write down any case number you see with interesting items, and have an attendant help you when you have finished looking, just go around to all the cases, and have them opened 1 by 1. Last bit of advice- Most Americans including most antique dealers are unaware of English and British hallmarks on silver, so brush up on your hallmarks, also most are unfamiliar with what coin silver spoons look like, since they are usually unmarked.
Examples: a Lion with his right paw raised means sterling (but, be careful because this mark is also used on plate, so know the difference between the two marks, they are very similar). Also, up until recently a pentagram inside of a circle also denotes sterling, along with about a 100 or so other marks. European silver is really easy to find at reasonable cost. You will have the most luck stopping by on a daily basis if possible. I happen to get the deals because I am always there and see it when it comes in, plus dealers know I like silver so they actually bring it to me. As silver is dropping the "under melt" deals are rapidly dwindling. I bought lots of silver "under melt" when it was over $20.00/oz. so lately it has been hard to get, but I still manage to make at least one purchase every day. GOOD LUCK, and let me know if you have any questions. I also can identify marks pretty good if you are ever wondering. I will post a link to the best identifier I know of. |
