Article in Macleans (Canadian News Mag) I saw today dated Aug 18. Main Points:
Gas Prices - price of gas is up to level that saw riots in April that left 7 dead. Govt had to lift fuel subsidies in June due to lack of funds to continue program. Higher fuel quickly translates to higher cost of living for poor because cost of bus and food transport goes up.
Food subsidies also running out in Sept leaving families that must pay for school vulurable to malnutrition. Widespread concern for more violance.
As poorest country in Western hem and reliance on imported food make country suseptible to rising food and gas prices.
And here is the kicker (photo included) A recent Guardian newspaper story says that already more people are eating locally made "mud cakes" (literally patties made from mud-yummy!) to alleviate hunger pains. Traditionally, pregnant women eat the clay patties to try to get more iron, but children are eating them too.
A doctor predicts that the next blow will be a water crisis and predicts water riots.
I guess they need clean water to wash down the dried mud cakes! In the French Revolution Marie Antonette said "Let them eat cake" in response to the food shortage. The people were not impressed and over threw the government.
Inflationary pressure in this former french possession has reduced that advice to "Let them eat mud cake". Can revolution be far behind?
