I stated in a previous post to the halves thread that I am back at school in south Alabama. After getting $80 in halves on Tuesday I went back today to make an order. I have had great ease doing this in my home town and the ladies at the branch where I get my halves have come to know my name and are glad to get halves for me. Never had problems. Until today. I asked a teller if I could place a coin order for halves. She acted like I had asked to cut out her liver right there on the spot. "um I'm not even sure how to order those (looks to the other teller next door)" The teller then picks up the phone and dials the vault manager who is befuddled and comes out to speak with me. "You want half dollars?" "Yes m'am" I said "you know like they're not old ones in there just the new stuff?" "Oh yes just straight from "the fed"" She had tossed that phrase around already so I just went with it. She then had to check with her teller manager and after promising over and over that I would get all of them within a month or so because "I mean we don't keep those around....." She agreed to place the order.
Really long shpeal I know but I guess I was just so astounded at the length I had to go for some @&$* halves. Does this happen often?

My bank freaks when I ask to order pennies. I couldn't imagine if I asked for halves. |

It's probably just to discourage you from ordering coin. Don't let them discourage you.

| There is a growing reason in banks lately not to order out, give out, etc large amounts of coins. The reason is since this latest coin collecting boom, many people do just that. The problems are that most people just end up returning all of them. Some in bags and some bother to roll them. Ever increasing is the short roll. Banks find that many, many of the rolls returned are short one coin. This adds up and it is impossible to prove theft. Many banks are taking down the names of people that return large amounts of coins so that if anything is wrong they will take it out of thier accounts. If no account, some banks will either reject the coins or tell the person with them they have to send them out for counting and you will be charged a % for that service. Some are going in and out over and over for change and this takes up time for thier tellers for nothing. At 5 different banks around me they have all rejected coin returns but say they will send them out for counting and the amount will be entered into an account minus the fee for counting. |

That is why I have been am shying away from CWR nickels lately. I am sick of getting pennies and 39 coin rolls.
I have noticed most small busineses will break open and count rolls before they accept them. I had to watch and wait at Borders earlier this week as the cashier broke open and counted 2 rolls of pennies from a customer (no it wasn't me).
This is definately becoming a problem that is only going to get worse.

I got a roll of CWR pennies last week that was *12 cents* short. Twelve cents, no biggie, but dang, that's 12 coins. I didn't notice the roll was significantly smaller than the others until I got home.
When somebody has to scam on how many pennies they put in a roll, that's when you know somebody's broke.
The bank where I pick up Brinks boxes will weigh CWR when you turn them in. They break out the little digital scale right there. They didn't used to, but they started doing this a couple of months ago. |
