Can you imagine trying to carry a pocket full of these things...

It sterling and weighs 2000 grains, that puts it at 4.16 T/oz, 3.85 T/oz of Ag.
It is legal tender in Panama.

Interesting - beautiful photos. Jeez - how thick is this coin? ... 1/4 inch - hah. I just can't seem to get nice close up shots of coins with my camera. What setting(s) are you using? |

It's about 3/16" - 1/4" thick. I don't want to open it so that is just holding a scale next to the edge of the container and eyeballing it.
I turn on the macro function and turn off the flash. Then manually set the white balance to match the light source. I have 5 100 watt flourescent bulbs just above the table to provide the light. Then a steady hand and the proper positioning to avoid shadows and glare at the same time. It is not perfect but all I have to work with. Even then I have to brighten the pics in Office Picture Manager. I can not get my scanner and shiney coins to work.

Given that melt, I can imagine a vacation in Panama just to carry around a pocket full of those things |

| To me the amazing thing is the sheer scale of the thing... lordy it would take something on the order of 1200 tons... two and a half million pounds... to press a coin that large. That's a big press. I think somebody's just showing off their press capacity. |

Panama has always had a dollarized economy since Panama's independance 1 Panama balboa = 1 US dollar. So the coin is worth $20 and I would not go spending it given the silver content. Great coin!
Panama has another interesting currency example. In 1941 President Arnulfo Arias issued balboa banknotes, Just 7 days later they were recalled. Since then they are refered to as "The Seven Day Dollar." Otherwise US bank notes have always circulated.
Circulation coins generally line up in size and composition with the US coins.

| Your all missing the really big problem. It's not just carrying a lot of them, try picturing the vending machines sizes. Just what would a gum ball machine look like? And if your a coffee drinker, that would be one cup of Starbucks Coffee you know. |

You could use one of those as a coaster. |

That coin takes "mirror finish" to a whole 'nother level. I can see the lens of your camera in the photo. |
