Holy crap this is great. You could clean up on bar bets telling people you can rip a penny apart with you bare hands. LOL

I wonder if this could be done on a large scale and allow for the harvesting of pure copper from Zincs...........Hmmmm.....

Did that in chemistry in 9th grade. We did it with one pre-82 and one post-82 and had to compare the results (which should be pretty obvious). We also had to determine the percentage of zinc in the post-82 penny.

Would the minuscule amount of copper in zinc pennies make this worth the effort as long as we're getting good copper percentages in our sorting?

Really cool - the zinc core desintegrates in the HCL after just several hours ...

I did this a while back but I didn't do the sandpaper step. If you don't do the sandpaper step, you get a lot of damage to the copper layer before the zinc is dissolved. So what was left of my copper penny was much thinner than the one the video shows.

Anyhow I think I going to have to try this again and if they turn out OK I'll send a couple to Copper Catcher.

Thanks horgad!

Question: Has anyone found while sorting pennies a penny that looks like the copper layer was missing all together either on the entire penny or on one side? I have a few and wondered what the value was and if they should be sent in to PCGS to certify or if it would be worth it? Anyone know?

Most of these are pennies that people have experimented on (either by plating them or deplating them), but I do believe there are some real mint errors out there that cause that all zinc look. The problem is I don't know how to tell the difference. So all though I have seen several of them, I generally ignore them...

I swear that I saw one that had been certified, for sale, the other day, but I can't find the link now. Still the odds are it is not an error...wish I could help more.

US 97.5% Zinc Penny:
Calculate 2.5% copper value :
(3.4257 × .00220462262 × 2.5 × .025) = $0.0004720

Plus since the copper is on the outside, all loss due to wear would be from the minimal amount of copper value. Zinc is lost in the process, so zero value there. Deduct the required materials, effort to sand off a little copper (further reducing the copper recovered)... I think I'll stick to sorting.

If Copper ever gets high enough to justify pulling it of zincs we will be sorting quarters for CuNi

Very interesting demonstration and easy to do. Just be sure and turn off the music since it is truly offensive.

I suppose if the price of Zn gets high enough to justify such measures, and the melt ban is still in effect, that is one way to circumvent it.

Actually, didn't he just violate the melt ban and post it on the internet..?

I am curious, why do you find that song offensive?

It is not my style of music is all. Yes, I'd say he violated the melt ban but the ban is hardly designed to protect coins one at a time. Interesting to see how easy zn melts.

Probably so, but never underestimate the zealousness and stupidity of Government. But on that note, maybe that is a way around the melt ban, 1 at a time...

It would be amazing how fast I could melt them one at a time... nano seconds between. The other way is to melt Canadian Copper you buy from me - just don't tell me about it.

Well Legacypac's video is certainly something I will file in the back of my mind for future reference.

I suppose one could ring the burner with pennies and up production, 5 minutes worth of propane on high is maybe worth $.50. but now you have both zinc and copper separated and scrapable.

'And just as an aside here I used to type on a typewriter and I always had the cent symbol now it is gone and it really cheeses me off that I need to type $.01 instead of 1 cent sign.

Thank you

It is a pain but you can still get a cent sign and a bunch of other stuff too.

While using the number pad, try typing Alt 0162.
