What a waste of police, fire dept, and store staff time!
Suspected copper thief caught in act

Authorities had to use a firetruck ladder to get a suspected copper thief off the roof of a Smart and Final store in Tempe AZ.
Employees working at the store located near McClintock and Broadway say, they spotted the man taking copper wire from an air conditioning unit on the roof just after 6:30 Tuesday morning.
When the man refused to come down from the roof, Tempe Police used a firetruck ladder to reach the man.
Tempe Police Sgt. Tim Bulson says it's a problem that's not going away anytime soon.
"Obviously this is a problem that's Valleywide, and it's just a crime of opportunity."

I recently saw a television report of some guy they arrested with a city light post strapped to the roof of his car.
Front page news in my town; they arrested a guy for home copper theft. |

Those thefts happen almost every day here. The A/C thefts have increased my workload that is for sure. We do a theft replacement at least once a week. They hit a skating rink twice in one week. Hard to steal if you are missing a hand or two....

Problem with that is with no hands he won't be able to work and provide for himself. Now he is going to be an even bigger leach on society.
If it were up to me I would have went up there with a shotgun and shot him like any other vermin and threw his carcass over the the edge and to be disposed of with the road kill animal control officers collect.

"Monitoring the price of copper is not usually considered routine police work. But with copper now trading at record highs, police across Canada say tracking the commodity is one way to help crack down on metal thieves aiming to cash in on rising prices.
"From a law enforcement perspective, what makes it so interesting is that it is the only time we see a direct link between street level crime as a direct result to what's happening on the London and New York Stock Exchanges," said Det. Const. Andria Cowan, the Toronto Police Service's dedicated "copper cop." Each time the price of copper hits a new record, as it did recently surpassing US$4 a pound, Cowan said she notices a spike in theft.
She began seeing a "dramatic increase" in the crime about two years ago, which is about the time copper prices started to surge.
The price of copper has quadrupled since the summer of 2005, when it traded at about US$1 a pound.
Utility companies, such as BC Hydro and Ontario's Hydro One, are some of the hardest hit victims, as are telecommunications companies such as Telus Corp. (TSX:T) and Bell Canada (TSX:BCE).
Thieves target copper cables at remote utility substations and along telecommunication lines, as well as copper tubing in empty homes or those under construction. The stolen wire is then sold to scrap metal dealers, currently for more than $3 a pound.
Late last year, police in Quebec busted an organized-crime operation that they say peddled more than $2 million in stolen copper by breaking into private companies and Hydro-Quebec installations.
