I don't scrap, but on the local craigslist here, there are listings posted in the "free" category -- usually gutters, aluminum doors, appliances. There are a half dozen or so posted every day for my city of about 200,000.
There are also listings posted by people who will come by and haul away scrap metal for free. Therefore, I deduce that those folks have read craigslist and found the above-mentioned free ads and been motivated to place listings of their own. |

It might also be helpful for you to figure out when the trash pickup days are for various neighborhoods. Once you know that, you can cruise by the day before trash pickup. People will throw out anything. |

If I had a truck and trailer, I would be all over the ads from craigslist. I don't think of scrap as appliances or a pile of junk, I think of it as piles of one and five dollar bills.
A lot of the people posting ads for WANTED scrap metal and junk cars leave a bad impression with me. They seem to be partially illiterate, and just from reading a few sentences, I know that I don't want them on or near my property. For all I know, they're meth addicts. I've read newspaper reports of people that have been robbed after giving away scrap to strangers. I think if someone were to have a well written post and develop a good reputation they would get more bites.

| I have an add that I place every few days where I ask for aluminum cans, steel food cans and plastic .05 cent deposit bottles. I get a good response every few weeks or so. Just this week I had a women email me and offer " a few bags of cans and bottles". She was close by, so I went over to pick them up, and she had 3 GIANT trash bags full of beer and soda cans and plastic soda bottles, around 500 each!! She always meant to cash them in, but was moving now and didn't have the time to mess with them. I crushed all the cans and added them to my stash. All of the bottles are going just over the line into Mass this weekend for the deposits. If you word your ad the right way, you will get responses. You just need some patience!! |

| Hi Scooter, I definitely use craigslist for the free stuff. I've made probably a few hundred dollars or so the last few months just from the stuff there. |
