Hi all,
I'm a new member, but I've been doing pennies since march, so I guess you could say I'm not a COMPLETE newbie-
Anyway, I sort $100 face in pennies by HAND every week now. I'm so darn good I can do all 4 boxes in a day....I pick them up every Wednesday or Thursday, and every Tuesday night I start jonesing for the pennies...like now...
Anyone else here sort by HAND? How many boxes do you do a week? (be honest, now) I like sorting by hand because you become VERY intimate with the pennies- you never miss a wheat or indian head (YES, I have found 1 IH -an 1888.)
It takes me about 8-10 boxes to yield $50 Fv in Cu pennies. So, it boils down to about $5-$6 in coppers in each box, and about 10-15 wheats in each box. I keep the wheats and indian heads, and sell the coppers on ebay. If you receive payment in money orders, you can almost always turn at least $20 profit. Not much, but hey, sorting the pennies is fun for me, so it's essentially free money.
Sound like the usual for you as well?

Only when they CAN'T have it, ......THEN they'll want it.
I love Cents. If you get an UNC box, you win. If you get a regular circ. box, you win. If you get a zinc box, you don't lose....so you still win. |

I hand sort (with my wife!) and we manage about 6-7 boxes per week (+ 3-4 boxes of halves, occasional nickels and quarters) Sometimes my yield is about like yours, most times a little better. I get at least a box of coppers a week. Same thing on wheats, foreigns, and my 1 1906 indian. I've done one $50 bag and am not inclined to try for another. Low yield, few wheats. |

| I hand sort but only do a wimpy one box per week. I think I have ADD or something because beyond that I get a little bored. I can usually do one box in about 6-70 minutes all the way through, counted, and recorded on the spreadsheet. I am picking up two boxes on Friday though and just getting back into it after a 6-week layoff due to moving and a trip. |
My hobby: collecting real money 1 copper cent or nickel at a time.

Man, you guys are fast! I sort one or two boxes a week depending on my work/school schedule. It probably takes me two hours to do one box... I'm easily distracted. |

Another hand sorter here, down from 4 boxes a week to just one. I got burned out back in the spring. I keep all the coppers and return the zincs, since my credit union has a complimentary coin sorter.
I agree that sorting by hand allows you to catch stuff you might miss with a sorter. OTOH, hand sorting will never result in hoarding copper by the ton. |

| Before getting a ryedale I would hand sort $50 to $150 a week. Now with the ryedale I just sort the copper pile to pull out canadian and wheats. I watch the zinc for older wheat / indians, found a few. With the ryedale I am still only sorting $50 to $150 a week, but I can do it in half the time. It's nice not having to look at the dates on a bizillion zinc cents. |

I hand sort, averaging about 5-6 boxes a week. Every now and then I switch to nickels and halves for a week or so to get some variety.

| I hand sort as well. As a long-time collector, I cringe at the thought of missing an Indian Head, a key Wheatie, or a Steelie. I had a nice bag last week - strong copper content (30%+), 2 Indians, handfulls of Wheaties including a nice 1919-S and 53 Steelies. The Steelies where a surprise. |

| I hand-sort because my capital is tied up in gold and silver, and I'm not cashing that to buy a machine, up the amount of boxes, etc. It would create new problems for me disposing of all those fake pennies. As it is I can operate close to under the radar. |

| I hand sort, too. My average pace is 250 an hour, but I tally years and mintmarks as I go, which eats up a lot of time (but is a statistical gold mine for my own entertainment). I stick to cents found in circulation at the rate of about 100 a month. Every one and then I'll get a few rolls from bank tellers, and I go through a box or two each year. |

| My entire collection is hand sorted, but sounds like you do more in a week than I have total. |

I tried to get that going, but no such luck. I hand sort halves and nickels. Ryedale gets the pennies. |

Al contrar.. I used to be a hand sorter prior to automating. I had a 2 ton hoard of copper prior to buying the Ryedale.
I used to hand sort about about 15-20 boxes a week. Even though I got my sort rate down to about a box an hour it was taking too much time and I was buying boxes of pennies faster than I could sort them. The choice to automate was an easy one for me. I still don't miss any wheats or Indians because of my sorting method. I hand sift through the zincs to pluck those Indians and older wheats and hand sort the coppers to pull out the wheats, Canadians and sub-prime pennies. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

I do 4 or 5 boxs a week. Sometime I get pennies by the $50 bags. And I do use a magmifier lamp to see the dates faster. |

I do on average 5 to 10 boxes a week. I have sorted about 1000 fv of copper since starting this year and have found three indian heads. For me for the Ryedale to be worth it I would really have to up the scale of the operation and I am not yet ready for that yet. |

| I haven't sorted anything for a while, partly because I wanted to let some cash pile up and partly because it's too doggone hot here to do any running around this time of year. (This place is the hottest in the nation about one day out of three. Indio and Thermal, both in CA, compete for the other two days.) I had this plan to investigate little stores outside of town to see if I could get more than 15% coppers. My sister who lives out of town brought me a handful of coins and I got 30% coppers from that little pile. So along about September I will head out to the boonies to see what I can find. (Boonies means anyplace wet enough to farm. Anything else is desert.) |

| I still get my usual 2 boxes each week, but haven't had much time at all for sorting. Quite a backlog to do, but I'll probably save some for Winter. My big problem has been working 60+ hours per week in front of a computer and getting heavy duty eye strain after just a short time hand sorting. I've tried it with and without my glasses and there's no way that's better for my eyes. Oh well. The boxes aren't going anywhere. |
Here in Wisconsin, we have some of the highest property and gasoline taxes in the US. We're squeezed so much, I have to make my daughter wear penny boxes for shoes. At least she has an endless supply. |

| I hand sort. Usually 2 or 3 whenever the urge hits me. I'm a pretty irregular sorter. |
